Got the newsletter today and saw that the leather sheath is made in the USA for the copper bolster 110.
Is that normal? Seems most of them I have seen in the last few years had Mexican sheathes.
Is it USA made for sure? Are more of the leather sheaths USA made or was this for the special run?

Great looking knife on all counts. Would be neat to see some more copper in the line. Likely wouldn't wear well but good BBQ knife.

I believe this will be made by the same US company that made the fancy nylon one for chuck Buck 110's and this year
making a leather one for the Chuck Buck 110. They have been getting a very good product out of Mexico since their California plant
was 20 miles from Mexico. Their are many different qualities of leather in Mexico..one of the Cowboy boot companies is selling belts
under their name made in Mexico!

I was looking at this one as well, very interesting. Does anyone have opinions/experience with copper bolsters (not necessarily on a 110)? Will they wear/deform to much to be an 'EDC'?

Copper is considerably softer than brass so one would think that it would not "wear" as well.

I think this is strictly a collectable; not a knife that should be edc for sure, and not really used; If you pay $185 for an EDC to impress your friends, well......
get a regular 110 for $40 , a better idea!!

That's pretty much what I thought dc...just seems a shame to put S35vn on a shelf queen. Oh, and none of my knives are to impress my friends, they are for working, hence the concern for wear on the bolsters.

Is it pure copper? Wouldn't the frame for the 110 be work hardened? That would make it tougher/harder than just a regular piece of copper wouldn't it? I mean brass isn't that hardest thing going and I've owned more than a few 110's that were pretty well used an abused and still worked fine. Not sure I'd discount a copper frame 110 as an EDC based solely on speculation.

Hardness of copper vs brass (about the same) shown on Mohs (scratchability) scale (both are about as hard as calcite):

Copper: 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohs_hardness)
Brass: 3.5 (http://homepage.usask.ca/~mjr347/prog/geoe118/geoe118.mohs.html)

more research: http://www.sciencetoolbox.com/articles/Mohs-Hardness-Scale.html

BTW, while we are talking about scratch testing bolster material, I know at least one of you who's lovely wife/girlfriend will scratch out your !@#$% if you buy one more knife and you know who you are. Yup. The other scratch test. Uh huh. Could be you. Definitely not me. Nope. Not a chance its me. Always the other guy.

Oregon...thanks for the links, interesting stuff, and it puts the knife back onto the 'want' list...I'm just curious about your knowledge of my wife's reaction to the last BCCI knife I purchased?

Apparently there are a number of hardness tests for metals, some of the most common being Mohs, Brinell, Rockwell, and Vickers, among others. The Mohs test is, as Oregon has stated, a scratchability test (I don't know how the measurement of scratchability is accomplished) that is primarily used for jewelry. The range is from one (for talc) to 10 (for diamonds); brass is a 3.5 while copper is a 3, so a 0.5-point difference here might be significant when one considers that only 10 points separates talc from diamonds. The Brinell, Rockwell, and Vickers tests all impress a sphere or cone into a metal to determine hardness, measuring the resistance to that impression pressure. On the Brinell scale, brass measures 192-202 while copper measures 80-85. On the Rockwell scale, brass measures 93.5; apparently, that scale doesn't go low enough for copper (if it did, I could not find it), but using a conversion table, it appears that it would be about 50. As with the Mohs test, I don't how significant these differences are.

So, the bottom line still remains, at least for me, that copper is considerably softer than brass and likely will not hold up as well with use.

On the money, Tin Sue. It is considerably softer. Yet, it polishes and looks pretty. Something different. Nickel silver and stainless are still harder, can be polished and are heavier. DM

LOL. I have a virulent strain of cutlery fever so my desire knows few bounds. I run some purchase plans by her "laugh test." If she doesn't say that's ugly or rip it in some other way then I have the go signal. However, the scale has tipped in my favor for a good long time now and there will come a time to even things up. For example, a new car, trip or long green contributions to the retirement plan for her. In the mean time she gets what she wants every time.

Saw the copper 110 at the Blade Show it is really fancy looking. Will try for good photo tomorrow,,,,,,,300

Go Craig go! Reel in the fun and excitement of the big show. Please don't forget the peanut gallery left behind in the trenches while you bask in the bright lights of celebrity.

BTW, was the copper bolster tested for hardness and compared to the brass hardness used by Buck? If so what was the verdict? We speculate about wearability but we don't really know the makeup and hardness of the specific materials used. Perhaps you can do some detective work while you sign autographs Craig! :)

The prototype was auctioned off at the BCCI business meeting yesterday….after it was passed around the room for everyone to handle.

I didn't bid on that one because it went high, but I will be getting at least one from the club. I thought it was an exceptional 110.

Thank you Stumps for being our man in the field. Any cool swag come your way for being at Blade? Last year was the key fob with tiny anvil (I still want one of those). Anything new this year?

There should be a host of BCCI members displaying their collections at Blade. Best of luck to them in the competition and thanks for representing the marquee.

The one thing I missed out on that I wish I had bought when they were still available was a 110 that had been signed by Chuck and CJ in Idaho and Josh was adding his signature in Atlanta.

I'm not one that likes signed knives, but that was three generations from the Buck family. I thought that would have been nice.

They were all gone when I went back to pick one up.

Craig took lots of pictures and I imagine others did as well.

Yesterday was a marathon trip for me. I had to leave my house in central Florida at 1am to be at Blade when they opened, spent the day there wandering around and went to the business meeting, then drove back to central Florida arriving home at 11:30pm….a quick 22 1/2 hour trip. It was worth it though.
