I was looking at one of the variants of the Manix 2 and noticed that the blade was BD1 steel.I have not heard of it before. What is it comparable to?

I respect Jim and his testing procedure but my experiences with BD-1 in day to day, edc use ( not scientific or rope cutting like jim) leaves me with a feeling like a steel somewhat above 12C27, 13C, 420HC, Aus 8, etc.and a few more. It is a bit more difficult sharpening ( relative, to me S90V isn't a problem) than the razor steels but it's not bad at all. I like it, as I liked Gin 1 . We are talking about a steel with almost 1% carbon and 15.5% chrome. It seems pretty balanced and not great, or weak at any one attribute.

Thanx Joe. That sums it up pretty well. We needed a "standard" non PM steel for less expensive models. Carpenter was nice enough to create the blend at our request, and I might add, they did a very good job.

My very favorite Spyderco, all I own are Swiss Army, Leatherman and 10 Spyderco, is the light weight blue Manix 2. I love the grip, weight, action and the steel stays sharp very well for a moderate to light user and on the Spyderco sharpener it takes me max 10 min to make very sharp.

I have a ukpk and manix lightweight in this steel and I'm a fan. I really like this steel. Same opinion and experience as ronnielc above
