BDU Cargo Pockets and Knives

Lately I've taken to mil-spec BDU's with a Benchmade 942 clipped onto one of the cargo pockets. It is such a natural place to carry a knife. With your arms at your sides, your fingers are only an inch or two away.

Retrieving the knife is easiest if the front button is left undone. For almost anything I'm likely to do during the day, this works just fine. So far, I've not lost anything from my pockets. The top flap still seems to hold everything in place using only the rear button.

If you wear BDU's, do you usually leave one of the cargo pocket buttons undone? Ever lost anything as a result?

Do you carry a knife clipped to a cargo pocket? How heavy of a knife seems practical? My 942 is pretty light.

German Army BDU's actually have a knife pocket built into the right cargo pocket of the pant.

It can easily hold a folder or a six inch fixed blade and you never have to worry about the blade slipping out.

My M9 Bayonet sheath has a nice pouch for a pistol magazine or a mid-to-large folder :D

(Sorry...had to be rediculous for a moment.)

I mostly wear Royal Robbins 5.11 (i know about the "shopping mall ninja-issue), and i always out my folders into the right back pocket. This is the optimal place IMHO.

I found some cargo pants at Old Navy believe it or not that have a knife/whatever pocket sewn onto each cargo pocket. One holds my AFCK and the other my Inova X5MT. I bought three pairs.

patrickb, go to <mallninja.com>. For the most part it's a stupid site, but click on the link "Mall Ninjas Speak Out" or something like that. Check out the links on the bottom of the page. The individuals who put together the page have linked to some actual posts from this one guy. I respect any job someone has to do, but this particular guy is taking his job a bit serious. I still really don't know if this is a joke or not.

PS, I don't know if listing another web page is allowed in these forums, I'm sorry if this is crossing any lines.

I forgot to add two important points:

1 - I find that even more advantageous than the fact that you have the knife literally 'at your fingertips' in the cargo pocket while standing, is the fact that when seated (especially in a car) the knife is MUCH more accessable than if it were clipped to your front pocket or elsewhere.

2 - Yes, I have often carried in a cargo pocket with the front button un-buttoned, but I find it almost as fast and more secure to leave it buttoned.

Man, us knerds will find anything to beat to death if it is remotely knife related.

While I don't wear cargo pants or fatigues very often, I do wear carpenter pants (jeans from THE GAP) all the time. Only thing I can get to fit my quads. Anyway, the side leg pockets carry my cell phone, CMG Ultra, and sometimes my Wegner Mouse 2. My BM943 rides in my rh hip pocket most of the time. Old Navy carpenter pants have a double right hand hip pocket, but rather than being a small useless pocket like on Levi's or such, it's quite large. There are also three right hand leg pockets rather than the usual two.

I carry a large, wood inlay Classic Sebenza daily in the cargo pocket of my uniform BDUs. It's more accessable than in the upper pocket under my holster and has the added advantage of the flap protecting the clip from scratches. As far as weight goes, I carry a Nextell in the left cargo pocket and it's not a problem (with all the required gear, I don't have room for it on my duty belt)

I must add that a pair of RR 5.11 costs about USD 100 over here (if you get them at all). These are very hard to get by, so this SMN does not apply to our good old europe.
