As per the opening page of TACTICAL FORUMS.COM. I Have to admit that police clad in BDU's doesn't do a lot for me. BDU's do have a place in law enforcement, primarily tactical units, and obviously the colors should be suited to the mission. No one wants to hunt down alternative agriculture fields wearing baby blue BDUs. Normally I wouldn't even post this, but I saw a local sheriff department officer today dressed in full OG107s (old drab jungle fatigues). He even had name tapes and green jungle boots.

His appearance peaked my interest, so I went over to ask about the uniform. He told me that his department thought the uniform made more of an impression. Talk about the wrong answer for me. Yea, the impression is that the military is doing the policing in Fayetteville, AR. Does he really feel the need to appear "combat ready" while getting coffee at Barnes and Noble?

The military has a broad variety uniforms. Every boot camp recruit has endured the uniform drill, where the Drill SGT/Drill Instructor stands on the pad, barks out a specific uniform, while the recruits run like hell to get into the stipulated uniform, only to have the Drill SGT yell out another change.

Guess my point is that different uniforms exist for a purpose, and sometimes law enforcement puts on the wrong duds in the morning. Please don't misunderstand I support LEOs full bore, but do feel strongly about military style duds when not applicable.

Mmm, one more thing. While over at TACTICAL FORUMS couldn't help but notice the extra push being made for MD ATAKs. Guess they aren't flying off the shelves like they have been. Tee hee.

Please excuse my juvenile glee. People reap what they sow.

To best understand what uniforms cops are wearing, you must first understand a police chief(good luck). My department is thinking of going to all black BDUs. Altough they are more comfortable, they do not do anything for me. I like the normal uniforms for everyday use. Leave the BDUs for the ERT guys. But if the chief says a BDU is the uniform, then that's what I will have to wear.

LEO's should be thought of as our neighbors and part of the community. This trend to dress in military outfits with masks even worn at times bothers me.

Not sure this belongs in the Blade Discussion Forum, guys. Politics sounds like a better choice to me.

Have you noticed the "police blue" BDU's look suspiciously black?

The BDU pants are definitely more comfortable than the old polyester crap we were issued. Plus the thigh pockets hold equipment that normally would be carried around in hand. Sometimes it is more convenient to be able to shove NVD or binoculars into the pocket rather than shift it around hand to hand (I work with deaf people and so I need my hands to communicate).
We even got the shirts changed from the polyester button downs to Blauer Cool Max pull overs. Much more comfortable in Texas summers.
I have seen officers dressed in blue, black and brown BDU's but never green. I think that is highly unusual.
