be very very afraid...for the NECKA knife cutting competition...that is all...for now! :D :p

what are some of the test they put knives through? id like to see if my blades would hold up, doubtfull, but should be fun!

hmmm... lets see, 2x4 chop,hanging rope,beer cans filled with water...couldn't waste a full beer now could we...maybe IG's tree :D :p
make something, you'll have a great time...that way you can always tweak out another design,if the one you make does'nt perform the way you like...
nothing beats making a knife, and seeing how it measures up :)

Hi Guys, can you post the specs on a knife for the competition? Just in case anyone is thinking about making one for the hammer in. Also, Any tips re: steel or grinds? Joe- dont give up anything top secret!

Joe, is that the same blade you used last year?

Jay, I copied these specs from ABS site. One thing not mentioned, you'll need a way of attaching a lanyard for obvious reasons  After some guys eat the food at IG's their hands can get mighty slippery  or sticky as the case may be.

TEST KNIFE SPECIFICATIONS:
- Overall Length of Knife: Maximum fifteen (15) inches.
- Blade Width: Maximum two (2) inches.
- Blade Length: Maximum ten (10) inches from point to the beginning of either the guard, bolster, or handle of the - blade.
- Handle Configuration: Any handle configuration is acceptable with or without guard, bolsters, ferrule, etc.
- Handle material is irrelevant and solely the choice of the applicant.

Don't forget the lanyard hole. I do not want anyone walking around with a knife sticking out of their head. :D But I know a couple of the guys the knife would break first. :D

I am afraid......... Kidnapped and taken to a secret smithy known only to chisel and his minions. Sworn to secrecy under penalty of having to consume mass quantities of heat treating relish. The secret has been revealed to me. The gauntlet has been thrown down. Who is up to the challenge?

Let me say first that I am NOT a spokesman for the ABS
This is my take on these knives and the competitions drawn from my own experiance.

I noticed the specks given are for a "Test" knife. For ABS competition they require a lanyard hole(at the BACK of the knife), and that the handle have a visible pin(holding handle to tang of blade).
Here is a question I asked a couple of Masters........I wanted to know if I could make a knife with a 9-1/2" blade and a 5-1/2" handle.......They said no problem......it could be a ten inch handle and a five inch blade for all they cared, just as long as the blade was no more then 10" from tip to guard/handle. As far as thickness........I don't know of any restriction....I have seen several that were very thick. The blade also needs to be forged by the contestant for ABS events.

I think saftey is a big(HUGE) issue in these competitions........and during home testing.
One of the things is regarding your stance. If you are cutting righthanded you should lead out with your right foot........this keeps your left leg out of the path of the blade......very important! Vise versa for leftys. There was a smith testing I think last year in a Masters shop.....he was very excited and lead out with the oposite foot........cut his femoral artery and almost bled out in the Masters shop! Not my idea of a good time.

The ABS also require you to have a sheath or case for the knife. The last comp. I was in was at Morans hammer-in. After inspection of the knives we had to lay them out on a table and only pick them up when it was our turn to cut. The knife stayed in the sheath untill you were ready to make your cut and went back in after a quick inspection from a judge then back on the table.

Hope this helps and don't forget to wear saftey glasses
