Hey Guys,

I'm just wondering if anyone can help get a knife suited to cutting through tree branches and overgrown grass. I've just been hiking recently and some of the branches that got in my way are way to thick.

I'm just trying to go hiking with something that can cut through reasonable branches and is easy to sharpen after my trips. I dont really want to take a machete it's kind of an extra wait with my rucksack.

So does anyone have any suggestions on tips for knifes that cut through tree branches?

Cheers Curkz

There are light weight, ratcheting pruners that will cut 3/4" to 1" diameter branches.
Cabela's sells them for under $20. Part num. 51-4581

You could use a small, light weight, folding camp saw for larger branches. You can get these from
Cabela's, also for under $20. Part num 51-2472-002

The Cold Steel X2 Voyager in plain edge works nicely. It's what I use mine for, and it works nicely. That being said, for the larger branches you might want a folding saw or a small machete like the Condor Combat machete. It only has a 13 inch blade.

Would these knives also stay quite sharp if used on the branches excessively. Say i go spear fishing. Because i've used a lot of other knives and they just go blunt after 1 carving off the branch...

Honestly, if you're on a trail and there's a huge branch in your way, then walk around it. You're hiking. Don't be afraid to get dirty or go off trail. You don't need to be a panzer that plow through any speck of vegetation that gets in your way. I'm not saying you shouldn't get a machete or something, but if you have to chop at a branch for more than 5 seconds to get it out of the way, you should just walk around it
