If I remember correctly, the exact nature of the "Satin Finish" has changed considerably over time. I don't know which kind was found on which knives during which time, but I hope this helps
Polished steel- (I think this is the way most of the custom knives are done, as well as prototypes of production knives)
Glass bead finish - I think I have seen a couple of 98 Commanders with this finish. It looks very very cool IMHO, very shiny, very "silky"
Bead Blasted- Yes, this was the "Satin" finish for a time. I think they are pretty hard to find nowadays.
CN - Emerson tried out a Chromium Nitrate finish. It was pretty slick looking. I believe they sold a CN Commander and a CN CQC7B as a set, with matching serial numbers (The serial number says CN-XXXX or something like that). They pop up every now and then. I don't remember how many sets were done, maybe 200 or so.
Hard Chrome - This is the current satin finish on the production knives (I am pretty sure the customs still have hte polished steel look). I think it is probably the best finish. It looks nice, is very very hard, durable, and corrosion resistant.
