Bead Blast Finish and Rust

Does anyone have issues with their Bead Blast finished Duratech 20cv and rust?

I have a practically brand new xm18 with a bead blast finish and with no use I have found some visible specs of rust on the blade.
Luckily I was able to wipe the specs away, but it bothers me to see that a knife of this nature is this prone to rust.

Do any of you have to coat your blades?
I live in CA and weather here has never been an issue with any of my blades.

I am new to Hinderer and new to Duratech 20cv.

I love this knife, but am fearful of rust.

Lastly, is it possible to send this in to Hinderer for a change of finish ie. stonewash conversion?

Thanks in advance!

Are you certain it was rust if it just wiped off? Duratech 20CV is a powdered stainless tool steel so it is very corrosion resistant. But, the bead blast finish makes any steel more susceptible to corrosion than smooth finishes. If you are concerned, get yourself some Marine Tuf-Cloth and wipe the knife blade with it.

Hinderer Knives traditionally does not change the finish of a knife, and changing from bead blast to stonewash is not likely. You would be further ahead to find what you want and sell this one.

Thank you for your reply!

I'm pretty sure it's rust.
Under close inspection under light I can still see some rust colored specs. Hopefully those can be lifted and I think I will look into a Tuf-Cloth.

Ideally I would like to keep this one, but even small specs are a bit irritating. Hopefully the use of a Tuf-Cloth will take care of the issue.

If it's gonna be a user you could take fine steel wool, scotchbrite pad or even a Mr Clean Magic Eraser and rub the blade to knock down some of the high spots created during bead blasting.

You could also apply a thin coat of a high quality car wax on the blade from time to time to keep the rust from forming (as long as you do not use it for food).

If you decide to knock down some of the high spots on the blade I recommend taping the cutting edge first.

I've had problems with rust spots or freckles on several knives and multi-tools made from different steels - most of the steels were stainless.

My Striders in S30V with bead blast blades always rusted on me in the summertime - but just the part of the blade above the scale. It was from sweat. The wax helped immensely.

Get a bottle of Militech and coat the blade, then carefully heat it with a hair dryer until it absorbs into the blade. Do that two three times and forget about rust issues. . . .

+1. I coat all my knives in millitec when I get them. Really great stuff.

Uh, you did wipe it down after gundude73 came over an played with it?:p:D

I was wiping mine down in the parking lot after the show. I wasn't even going to risk my knives with the 20 minute ride home. :D

Thanks for all the info guys!

The millitec sounds promising. I wanna a one time fix or at least a one in a long time fix.
I'll definitely be looking into that.

Rob,
I wipe down my knives before, during, and after gundude73 handles my blades. lol
