This finish was used on earlier Busses as well as the BARFs, right? I have been told and have also learned from expreience that this finish is prone to rust just sitting in a box. Will I find this to be true with a Busse? Why is this finish used if it is so prone to rusting?

Well, as I hear it, the older Busse blades are just bead blasted, which opens up the pores on a blade and gives dirt and moisture a place to accumulate and cause rust and corrosion. The current method as I understand it is to blast the surface with a course grit and then a second blast is done with glass beads of some sort that serve to peen the opened pores closed. So you get a non glare finish with nearly the rust resistance of the satin finish. I have had some of my Double Cut Bead Blasted (DCBB)blades, that I have carried against my skin during sweaty Illinois summer months, rust a little. The rust usually occurs on the butt end that is in near constant contact with me.

All depends on what normal use is to you. If you do like me and wear it against your skin in August in IL, then maybe, but nothing a little steel wool doesn't get rid of. I should have added that, it never gets worse than what I can buff off with some steel wool.

As long as you perform regular maintenance you shouldn't have a problem. By that I mean keep it clean and oiled. After I spend a day working with a blade I wash it then give it a light coating of oil.

No problem.

Sorry..Should have been more specific. A day in the woods in either a kydex or leather sheath. Thanks for the help.

I have an old Mean Street with a bead blasted spine. No rust after 5+ years, probably closer to 8.

I laso have an early Assault Shaker that is bead blasted, no problems there either.

my mr.mofo with the dc finish spent a good part of the day in the rain working in the campsite. when i got home i washed all the dirt and grime off and the only rust i found was under the bottle opener. pretty impressive considering a couple of other tools i had (tomahawk, crinkle coated carbon blade) didn't fare so well against the elements :(

rust must be afraid of infi :)
