FAL'er sent along some fatwood with my package....I had it sitting on my desk and happened to read OLJ's post in this thread, post #19
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...-the-Knowledge-*WINNER*-BPrepared304-*WINNER*

that got me thinking and I decided a bead on the 5 lanyard made from the Oregon fatwood would be cool along with the FAL'er scales...so the whittling commenced

I decided to try out the new SAK's saw as well

The 5 is amazingly nimble, It is a large knife but I was able to do this tiny job with ease.

I carved it out....and I decided to be a real Jeremiah Johnson and use the SAK awl to drill the hole, well, I Ogreized it and snapped the bead in half. After a few moments of cussin & grumblin under my breath I carved another bead.
On this one I decided I was indeed NOT Jeremiah Johnson (or OLJ) and used a drill....and snapped it again. At this point I cussed & grumbled at a much higher volume then before...and carved another D*** bead.

I started drilling this one with the smallest bit I had and worked my way up thru about 5 sizes of bits until I had a cordage hole large enough. Finally, success!

I used a length of leather cord I took off my new boonie hat when I bought it (I cant stand chinstraps) and made myself a nifty old school cool lanyard complete with HIGHLY flammable bead. I love taking old stuff and finding a new use for them.

It only took me about 10 times longer then anticipated, ahead of the curve for me. I also ended up with a small pillbottle full of nice fatwood shavings and slivers.

Lookin good so far, I love the idea of fatwood beads since I've been seeing them, highly functional emergency decorations!

Nice I like the idea of a fatwood bead. I keep meaning to look for some around here but never remember to.

i know you just had smaller wood chunks this time, but I have drilled my hole first in a larger piece of wood, then carved around it.... gave me more strength to drill, and more wood to hold onto while drilling...

yeah...well fatwood is very frangible, not like normal pine at all, almost like working with soap.

You speak of soap as you know what it is.... ;). Final product looks awesome man...digging the leather with it.

Looks like it turned out really well once you got it to work. I've found that fatwood drills cross-grain pretty well, but that would probably make the carving more difficult.

Thanks guys, I like it myself!

cross-grain! facepalm. That WOULD have been way easier probably, I didnt even think about it. Im a duh duh duh dumba**

Good looking bead. Do not use that blade over the fire unless you want to be a juggler. haha.

Great work. I really like it with those handles and leather lanyard.

I think it's time I ordered some leather and tools and tried that stuff out. Some knives need leather sheaths...

That 5 is looking good, Thrill. It's amazing how useful that knife is, isn't it. I never would have thought it was such a good design until I actually got one in hand and began whittling away at stuff.

That 5 is gorgeous. Those are the scales that should have been on the famous Snakeskin-5.
The fatwood bead is cool, I have to go looking for some of that stuff just for kicks.

Nice work on that TB.

I like how you originally tried to keep all Jeremiah-Johnson even if it did not work out. The final product looks great!

Thanks guys, It is a nice rig. I swapped the wood scales to my 2 for awhile....but I dunno, I love them on both knives....I may have to get me another set of nice wood scales.
