Hello all ! I was looking at some of the bear cutlery damascus bowies and was wondering what the general opinion is on there knives ? I know they bill themselves as a working mans knife with few thrills , but are they solid ? I can put up with a simple knife . what I will not put up with is a cheaply made junker that cant hold an edge . Speaking of edges , how does there damascus steel hold an edge ? How sharp can you get these blades ? FYI , the one I am interested in is the gold strike cocobola bowie , the one that kind of looks like a case bowie . Any info would be great guys !

The Bowie and the Leek both have Alabama Damascus, a subsidiary of Bear's, blades. The Buck Custom Shop 110 is from a NY maker. The Bowie is pedestrian in it's build - but quite a bargain for that much 512 layer Damascus. No, it isn't - and never will be - a razor. The layers are always running out at the edge making it sort of a micro-serrated blade. It cuts quite well when 'pulled', ie, not sliced. Shaving arm hair may not raise many hairs - but you'll get plenty of sample for a DNA test! The sheath shown on the TN dealer's website looks better than the one I have - admittedly > 5yr old. Good to see you can still get one < $100, too. Oddly efficient at cutting small limbs. Probably a cheap way to satiate your Damascus blade desires. Made a few miles up the road - near Jacksonville, Alabama.

Meh. I find them to be corner cutters with ungainly designs, but that's just my personal opinion. Fit and finish wasn't too good on the ones I've seen and I don't like how dark their damascus is.
