Hello, Im looking at bear and sons knives. I like the idea that they are USA made. And very reasonably priced. But I have no experience with them. Do they put out quality tools or should I look elsewere. Im ready to order but I need help. the main reson I really like the upswept skinner. It looks just like a sharp finger. Im also interested in a dagger they make. How are thier products?

Thanks

I have tried one of their folders, and from what I have heard, my experience was on par with many others.
The finish was poor, it had a lot of sharp edges where there should not have been, bolsters, back of the blade, etc. The grind was inconsistent and on some parts of the blade, incomplete. Both of these things were fixable and resulted in a very nice looking knife, ultimately I found the heat treat to be so poor, I was having to resharpen the blade frequently, I could not even get a week of good use out of it.

If you want that style and American made, I would suggest looking for a used Sharpfinger online and at flea markets.
If you don't mind it being made elsewhere, I would look at the Condor version, I have had a couple of their knives and been happy. I would stay away from the modern Sharpfingers, the handles are hollow, molded acrylic plastic, not solid delrin like they used to be (and still claim to be) and the sheaths are very low quality.

Quality is extremely hit and miss. I worked there for years and would only buy knives that I personally made, start to finish. There are a few there that take pride in what they do and really try to make a quality knife but the majority are just there for a paycheck to score more drugs. But at minimum wage, the owners get what they pay for.

Wow, Thank you. Im glad for the heads up I almost pulled the trigger.I guess I'll look at something different thanks a lot guys

Search the auction sites, flea markets and antique shops for a U.S. made Schrade Sharpfinger. Case and Kabar have similar offerings as well. They can all be found for less than a lunch for two at McD's. I actually gave away my Kabar skinner in a pay it forward thread last year.
