When I first heard about this story I didn't know where it happened and I really figured it would have been a Grizzly bear and not a Black bear. As a father of four I can't imagine what that experience would have been like. On the other hand I also can't imagine going camping or anywhere else for that matter without a means to protect my family and myself.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Chanting quietly "I love my Ruger Alaskan, I love my Ruger Alaskan, I love..." Prayers to the family, bears are a serious problem if they want you gone

This is very Sad, I feel for the family as well as the others campers with the boy who are no doubt traumatized. This is yet anothe reminder that when we tread into the field we are in "Their" home, and must take all reasonable precautions.

I lived in Alaska and my family is planning a re-union in the Tetons in Wyoming. I live in Washington and I never go in the woods without a big pistol or a rifle, but you can not take a gun into a national park, where most of the grisley bear attacks occur. They just had a Grisley attack very near where we will be RE-unioning. I just bought a hugh anti-bear pepper spray can. Looks like a fire extinguisher. Maybe I'll practice throwing logs?

I live in the subburban area around Portland, Or (actually in Salmon Creek, Wa. just north of Vancouver, USA.) Through my son in law I heard from the man who the state calls to kill nusance bears and cougars in the urban areas. He has dispatched 19 bears and cougars since the sheeple out lawed hunting with dogs. About 5 years now. I know of at least five additional attacks (all cougar) that he was not involved in. Three of them were not in "their world" but in our suburba.
