Due to the increase in bear attacks...which is not the fault of bears, but the fault of humans encroaching on the bear's feeding grounds, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has posted the following notice:

Due to the increasing interaction between bears and humans, the following precautions should be taken by campers and hikers.
1) Wearing brightly colored clothing, with small bells on the shoulders, will
alert bears of your presence. This will avoid suddenly startling a bear.
2) Carrying pepper spray is highly advised, in case a bear startles you.
3) Recognizing the signs of bears is important.
Black bear dung is small, dark, and being composed mostly of berries-
has a fruit odor.
Grizzly Bear dung is larger, brightly colored with bits of cloth, has little
bells in it , and smells like pepper.

Good one Stacy.

When I was in Alaska we were told to always travel with a designated person. "What's a designated person?" we asked? "Someone who runs slower than you do!" we were told!

That makes me laugh.

Along the same lines as Phyl at work we found a fresh mountlion kill, myself and two others. We went back to it 45 minutes later and the cat had covered it back up, I told the other guys you don't have to be the fastest, but you can't be the slowest.

Hehe, Cheechako's always come up here and head straight for the bear spray and bells. I actually had to tell one guy that bear bells dont work on polar bears becuase they are not trying to avoid you. Alaskan bear spray comes in two flavors 454 casull and 45/70! Funny post.
