Nice! If I was a bear with any sense id run from that:D Cant quite read that tag? Any of you younguns able to read how big it is?

I'm trying to think who around here would be referred to as gentleman. Hmmm, nobody I can think of.

Bettin he's a nice fella whoever he might be specially when he's got the bear in his hand.

Respectfully,

Steve

Enlighten me. I forget just how the story goes, but is this a copy of the khuk that killed the bear in Nepal?

I remember reading that story, either here on the forum or at the HI web site. It was a Nepalese farmer who killed the bear, so his khukuri was probably different than the one pictured above, and certainly not as finely finished.

The first two images below are about an original khukuri made by Kancha Kami, the man who made the blade that killed the bear. The third image is an 18.5" OAL HI version made by Sher Kami. It is impeccably made and very robust. Due to excellent balance it feels lighter in the hand than its 38 oz.

Can someone tell me what the notch in the bottom of the blade near the handle is for? Thanks.

Cho - also called a kauri or kaura. a small notch in blade near handle.
"It has various meanings according to various people. A few are: the clitoris of Kali, the penis of Shiva, Surya ra Chandra (sun and moon, symbols of Nepal), a "Kowdi" ('cow-track' because the cow is sacred to the Hindus), a blood drip, a substitute guard, and on and on and on. Take your pick. The true meaning has been lost in time so today it is anybody's guess". -Bill Martino

Now im guessing Sher made it? Looks just like philllls. Maybe if Bear comes out of the bushes well find out?

The polish level looks to be Ravraj to me. We should have a lottery to see how is right lol. Ravraj had the best polishing habits.

I thought the ASTK took thebear down. Oh, and an M43, in another instance.

Although it is known that Kancha Kami made the knife that killed the bear, the story does not describe the knife. However, it is an old story, so the event took place long before HI existed. There is probably no way to know what kind of khukuri took down the bear.

The ASTK is a fairly recent HI model, and while it is based on a knife carried by General Amir Singh Thapa in the 1800s, there is no reason to think that a Nepalese farmer would have been carrying a knife of that particular design in his fields. The HI M43 is based on a WWII khukuri, with a nontraditional handle designed for Western hands (relatively long handle with no ring).

There is also no information that I am aware of about the kind of bear, or its size. Most likely it would have been a Himalayan bear, quite formidable but nothing like the thousand pound giant brown bears found in Alaska.

A Bear is a Bear! Nothin scares me more than an attacking bear except maybe a big pussycat! When your told you might as well stand up to it and puff up to make yourself look big. Thats just a kind way to say "Your gonna die dude!" Khukri or not! ....id still rather have a khuk and a lucky strike before I go:D

I think we had a local defend himself from a bear, with an HI product-- a serviceman living in alaska; said they would not let him keep the bear because people would kill bears all the time claiming they were being attacked, so they have laws against in alaska keeping a defense kill like that.
