i was watching t.v. & i seen man vs wild new season start tonight & i seen he has a new knife can't tell what kind it is. it seem to be orange & black.

This is by Gerber. Made in China and CHEAP. Get it Dick's Sporting Goods. If you go to Bailey Knives who used to make his knife it is clear they parted ways. Look somewhere else like ESEE for a knife.

Also, look into some spelling and grammar classes lol. But seriously, man vs wild is like the Jerry Springer of survival programs. Just alot of stupid, dangerous stunts labeled as "survival tips". Bear himself is an ok guy, and I can't doubt his accomplishments (he's climbed everest, multiple times) but that show is garbage, and is a danger to anyone who thinks he's giving sound advice. If you're lost in the woods, do not run blindly through thick forest, and jump down waterfalls and caves. His lineup of gerber knives an tools might be decent, but I won't be dropping any coin on that walmart crap.

couldn't have summed it up better...
I'd steer clear of anything called the "ultimate knife" in general :jerkit: marketing at it's finest

You can do much better for $49.95 ... like a mora & vic farmer combo :)

They can't be that dangerous. His camera crew follows him through the same stuff with a lot more gear on 'em. :p

As for the new Gerber, the 18-year-old kid a couple houses down down is a budding knife nut. I tried to put him on the right path with a Mora. He bought a couple more and a some decent folders. He come over the other day to show me his new Bear Grylls knife. Yep. He bought one.

It definitely has some heft to it. Not a light weight at all. It doesn't seem too terrible but nothing I'd buy. If I get a chance, I'll get it from him this weekend, take a couple pics and give it some testing. I'll post the review.

You pretty much have to go with all the ones with bland, Spartan names.

Ka-Bar Large Heavy Bowie

Becker BK2, BK7, BK9

ESEE-3, -4, -5, -6

If its name sounds tough, rugged, and bad-ass, usually it's not. Sometimes, though it is. But the price-tags of the ones with the amount of bad-ass to back up a name like that are pretty steep.

Busse Nuclear Fallout Bushwhacker Battle Maiden (I think that's what it's called)

Scapyard DogFather

Cold Steel Trailmaster (pretty good, not as good as the aforementioned ones)

ESEE Junglas

So you see, if it's below $100, and has a super-special-awesome name like "Elite Forces Survival Bowie" http://www.amazon.com/Elite-Forces-...f=sr_1_26?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1297994136&sr=1-26 then you're generally not getting a good knife.

Saw them in walmart the other day... I'll pass I think.. They were all serrated edges...

Bear Grylls...
You should have been watching something else. Or out playing in the woods yourself.

I learned more about outdoor survival by burning down my boy scout tent when I was 12 than I ever will from the TV.

Bear's new Gerber knife is perfectly fine. If it fails, his crew will just hand him another. :D

Although it would be considered cheap quality to most (and I think a lot of Gerbers products are subpar) it appears that Gerber has addressed some of the quality control issues this knife had in its first runs. Who knows though until more tests are done on the new batches of knives.

Adam from Equip2Endure interviewed Gerber at Shot Show 2011 about this knife.

Also, I think it gets old everyone bashing Bear Grylls all the time, just remember its entertainment and Im sure in reality outside of TV he is a hell of an outdoorsman compared to most and wouldn't take all the crazy risks when he isn't doing what Discovery Ch is telling him to for the show.
