Hi All

Is there 2 different versions of the BG ultimate survival knife? The one on Amazon Canada sells at [a given amount] and I just bought one at Wal-mart for [half that amount]. I think the one on Amazon has a better Sheath and different sharpener but is that worth a bunch extra?

Note, I'm buying this for fun. I have ZTs. I know what a "real knife" is worth :)

Thanks, and yes I know they suck. Gerber will be forever known as "made in china" I'd never solely depend on this knife, but hopefully it makes for a good back-up beater

Big Bear Grylls fan here. I was surprised when he put his name on that crap gear, but then I realized he's making $$$ off it through Wally World - a big part of the New American Dream. See 'Shark Tank'.

I've literally chopped down portions of small forests (hardwoods less than 20 years old, mostly junk locust) on my property with a $15 shank of steel "made in china" and purchased through BudK. I guess there's always the qc issue where a certain percentage of these 'knives' are guaranteed to break, potentially harming the wielder. I guess this was the one time I got lucky in life. :D

Enjoy your blade, beat that thing to hell and back and somewhere along the line get yourself an upgrade beater with better geometry behind the edge.

Meh. The only Gerber I've had that I liked was my Strongarm. I've already dug holes with it and chopped down several small trees. For the same price as the BG I'd rather have a good USA made knife that I can beat on than a cheap Chinese knife that has a much higher chance of breaking on me. Course there is the GI Tanto for only $23....

For those that can make an objective assessment, as I've said before, the Pro (upgraded) version is a pretty well thought out blade for the intended market, meaning the general purpose knife user, not the high(er) end enthusiast that spends a fair amount of time on Bladeforum. Not great, but plenty serviceable/functional. Decent size, ergos, profile, Hugh viz easy to spot coloring,, functional pommel, fire steel, whistle included. I dang near bought a couple three here in the past week or so. Had I not stumbled onto the Browning Ignite at 1/3 the cost, I would have.

Sure, there are those that will turn there nose up at it, probably never even holding one in hand. But for the average knife user that doesn't give a dang about $300+ sharpening systems and arguing about which is the coolest uber super cool steel, it'll do just fine. Most campers simply want something to do general cutting and stick whittling...not slice tamatoes for a fancy dinner presentation.

And this is coming from a guy who has owned Busses, CRK, Hinderer, customs, etc.

I'd venture to guess there's more 1000x more $35 buck 119s, which by comparison on paper, would be considered a less strong design, than all the 'high end, operator-grade' fixed blades out there. And we seldom hear about people perishing with a broken blade in their hand.

Long story short, if you want it, buy it. I'm sure it'll cut stuff. It's a outdoor/camping knife, not a 'glamping' knife.

I'd bet if they made a non-BG logo version, Gerber would sell more than a couple.

In fact, if my next paycheck is decent, I might just order one to tinker with.

Boss
