bear grylls

I'm sorry but there is no way I would buy a bear grylls knife much less one for $600, not even one for $50. Rather take a RAT or Sypderco.

Forum member Horndog owns one....He collects Survival knives.

Might get more awnsers if you post in the WSS section.

I'd rather be stuck 100 miles from nowhere with to my beat up bent up scratched up KaBar with the loose cross guard than that thing. And for $600! :eek: Someone must think a lot of themselves. I can think of at least 100 better things to spend the money on.

It's not really Bear Grylls' knife.....It's a bayley knife design that he just happened to use, and they took the opportunity to use it as good PR so they temporarily named one of their knives after him....but its back to its original name again....the s4 something....

I'm pretty sure thats the way it worked at least.....

anyway, its actually a really nice knife as far as I know....I'm not sure its 700 dollars worth of knife....but surely more than 50!

Yes, I heard that Rob Bayley parted ways from the Bear G. association.

With exchange rates its a $650 hand made knife from what I hear is a pretty well regarded maker. A lot of $'s for a knife but not at all unusual for one that is hand made from a known maker...

you can get really nice fixed blade for that amount or less from Tom Krein, Shane Sibert, Graham Knives, Todd Begg, etc.

Of course you well know that there probably a hundred+ US makers whose knives you can't even come close to for that amount.

I don't understand, it doesn't look interesting at all to me, and they mention the steel is RWL. do they mean RWL-34? my understanding is that it's just the Hitachi version of CPM-154, so why $600?

RWL 34 is not the Hitachi version of CPM 154. It is a Swedish Powder steel of similar composition, but not identical.

It's pricey because it is a custom knife made in the UK. The exchange rate makes it worse.

Horn Dog, who actually owns one, and has used it, has said it's a nice knife, even though it is expensive and that he has less expensive knives that he likes at least as well. He collects survival knives, so he is in a good position to make the comparison.

I am highly amused by all the folks who trash the knife without having seen it or used it.:rolleyes:

whoops for some reason I thought Hitachi made it as an upgrade to their ATS-34.

I think most people are trashing it because of it's association to Bear Grylls. I think it cheapens the knife, regardless of quality--it makes it seem like a gimmick.

He does actually use quite a range of knives... and more are cheap, than they are expensive.

He has used these in the shows that I know of.

* Titanium Pro Dive Knife
* Wenger Serrated Mountaineer Knife
* Gerber Gator Serrater with Clip Point
* Buck Iceman
* SOG Seal Pup

He normally does go on about saying that cheaper blades are more than fine for most survival situations and I think more often than not showcases the more normal priced knives in his shows.

Suprising he chose to feature such an expensive blade considering his general choice of price range.. maybe it was a sponsor job more than his choosing?

The specs of the one in question are:

* Hand Polished Clip Point Blade
* RWL Powder Steel
* Full Slotted Tang Construction
* One Piece Guard
* Weight: 200 grams (7 ounces)
* Handle: 115mm (4.5276 inches) ergonomic textured G10
* Blade Thickness: 4mm (.1575 inches)
* Blade Height: 30mm (1.1811 inches)
* Total Blade Length: 100mm (3.9370 inches)
* Interrupted Edge Length: approx 40mm (1.5748 inches)
* Cutting Edge Length: approx 60mm (2.3622 inches)

That being said... I have also heard good things about it... always going to find cheaper blades that some people find just as good if not better for them... but if you have the cash I am sure one wouldnt be dissapointing to own.
