No , the mother had been seen and they put a collar on her . They then tracked her and found the cubs - all are safe and healthy . The cubs , born in January , weigh about 6 lbs. Their den was a fallen hemlock tree near a creek and 250 yds from my friends house .There are a good number of bear in this county but I've never seen the family like that.

So do they just weigh them and return them to the mother/den ?

Pitdog, They tranqualize the mother then examine all of them , tag the cubs, then return them all to the den. The mother got a new radio collar so they can continue to track her.
That county BTW , has some big bears up to 800 lbs !!

They've been tracking that bear for years I just found out. This den is alongside a creek, last year a mile up the creek and the year before even further up.

Next year... she'll be in your back yard!

Cute picture, but what a gigantic waste of tax payer dollars. Just leave the bears alone, obviously is momma is having 4 healthy cubs per litter and there are black bears up to 800 pounds, the population is doing just fine. So much for common sense and logic.
