Coupla questions if you've the time.
I see little mention of the Bali's made by Bear MGC
I've had mine for about three to four years
it's the second one I've owned. the first being one of
those POS Jaguars'. I've seen a few different makes
of the Bear bali's including a (psudo?) damascas bladed
one. For the price and the fact that it's held up pretty
damn well to my abuse. ( this is the knife I use for every
grubby or tough cutting chore I can find) I wonder why
I don't hear more mention of them. They seem a good
compromise between dirt cheap. (jags) and production (szabo)
I was planning to get another one and perhaps that
damamscus looking one for show.
thoughts? Suggestions for other reasonably priced Balis'
(read as under $50)
Thanks fer your time

Search back through the forums. They haven't been mentioned recently because they have'nt done antything new and they have already been picked apart by the circling vultures from above. I don't have one personally but I have seen them and they are comparable to the Jags, and from what I understand even of a lesser quality than a Jag. Granted it is NOTHING AT ALL like a BM or other bali of the same caliber but certainly great for someone who can't find a reason to spend over $100.00 on a sharp toy.:D

Hey Chambers,

I personally think the cheaper bears are alright. I just picked one up because I'm just starting to get back into bali's. I've got that "Damascus" blade u were lookin at. The one I picked up is the 114D 5in. I dont reccomend it really.. Its too much $ for the knife...a bear, Its really not all that sharp (a good thing for me right now) and the "Damascus" rusts easily. It seems to me that it is really damascus in that its not just etched. They do seem to be a lower quality than the Jags bt i couldnt find a Jag in a store around here.
If you are going to get a Bear get a cheap one like $20-40 or buy a JAG and re-pin it. I've also seen in the forums that the Bears seem to break at the handel rather than the pin.
I've yet to try to sharpen it, I've got other knives i use to cut stuff, so i dont know if it will take or keep an edge. Just my thoughts.

My two roomates and I bought Bears last year around christmas...after about a month and a half of flipping we all had bm-42's because the bear's handle broke.

The blade on mine was Ok, but the handle material was extremely brittle and all of ours broke at the "fork" where the latch closes.

Just my opinion but if you can save the extra dough a 42 or even a new 43 or 47 would be much more worth it

I had constantly flipped mine for 3 years straight, and I loved every moment until the handle broke.

Mine came pretty sharp out of the box, but you just need to work the edge before you can get it really sharp.
