On the thread (what brands won't you buy) some people mentioned this brand. I was wondering what was the matter with them. I haven't heard much about Bear and would appreciate any history about Bear

I have three Remington branded knives made by Bear, one is not bad. But the overall fit & finish of the two more expensive damascus knives was not the best and not what I expected.

I've had my eye on the large stag bone folding hunter, but I'm not sure if I want to take a chance.

Over the years I have tried to like them, since they are USA made, but consistently, the fit and finish and quality of 9 out of 10 that I have personally handled has been extremely poor.

In my opinion, they're terrible. It's sad to me, but you's think that with the closing of Schrade and Camillus, Bear would take a little more pride in their product. They don't. Hardware stores around here can't even sell the stock they've got. The Scout shop in our BSA Council has them, but the F&F was terrible; some were returned.

The $100 sale-priced large Damascus cocobolo handled Bowie I bought some years back was okay for the price vs amount of Damascus - it's MSRP was considerably more. The sheath and knife's construction are pedestrian at best. The Damascus 110-ish with a Stag handle, #597D, was a B&M store 'win' on evil-bay for <$50 shipped - and unreal in it's f&f - quite impressive. It's similar styled predecessor here, a 297 with oak handles, is tight to unlock - but at least it is centered and not loose. It was the best of the four a local Academy chain had on closeout.

It is sad to me that an Alabama company cannot produce more consistently decent knives, perhaps something as simple as better QC. Their Damascus maker, Alabama Damascus, does a good job - especially with the blades they supply Kershaw.
