As some on this forum know through my incendiary tinder posts (pun intended), I spent a good bit of time out in the woods bush bumming this month. However, I didn't really do all that much real hiking, which I love. So yesterday I packed up the car and drove out to Bear Mountain, NY to hit the trails.
I took my buddy, my son and my dog Skipper. Bear Mt. is located on the west side of the Hudson River in Orange and Rockland counties. We took the Major Welch trail up, and the Appalachian Trail down.
The drive to Bear Mountain State Park is on a really fun road with great views. You cross the Hudson on the Bear Mountain Bridge, which is one of the nicest suspension bridges I've been on. When the bridge opened on November 27, 1924, it was the longest suspension bridge span in the world.
Like most hikes in the Hudson Highlands, this one starts climbing from the get go:
Here's Skipper huffing and puffing in the early morning light:
Skip making his way up a fun, but steep section of trail:
Skip and my boy taking a well deserved rest:
Eventually we started getting some good views:
A nice view of the bridge:
It was such a clear day that from the summit we could see New York City fifty miles to the south:
On the way down we took the Appalachian Trail. Here are some shots of a newly completed one mile re-routing of the trail. It took four years to finish the project, and it was done completely by volunteers.
Another view on the way down:
It's always great when you get a freight train rumbling along the river:
Heading home to the east side of the Hudson on the Bear Mountain Bridge with Anthony's nose in the background. The Appalachian Trail also goes over the bridge:
All in all a great day in the woods. A good time was had by all.
