After much thought into what I wanted from a folder and a fixed blade I decided on the Bear Ops CQC (drop point) and the Cold Steel mini AK47.
-Ill reveiws the Cold Steel AK-47 first.
Initial thoughts: Smaller than I thought even for the mini. I knew the blade was short, that's what I wanted but the handle felt a little awkward. The grip was like a very course sand paper.
After playing with it a bit: The grip is great. I absolutely love it. Its tough as nails and isn't going anywhere. The thumb plate needed some tightening out of the box but not a huge deal. Very sharp. As mention in some reveiws on youtube. The pocket clip with the grip will tear your pockets up and I see why. The grip is rediculously course, perfect for an EDC that's gonna see some tough use. Also is sharp as hell. The locking mechanism is tough too. Feels very hearty and when its lock its not moving, no blade play. Its really really sharp. The folding on it isn't fast unless you really practice with it I don't think its ever gonna be quick on the draw due to the handle configuration.
Overall very happy. The grips and sharpness are definitely on point, the locking mechanism is sturdier than I evpected. All for 50$. This is by far the best folder I've ever purchased. Need to get a holder for it though because the clip and grip will destroy your jeans.
-The Bear Ops CQC (drop point with cocobo handle)
Initial thoughts: Longer than I thought, sheath not MOLLE compatible, will get one after market.
After playing with it: Balance feels ok. Thought it was supposed to be single bevel. Not very sharp. Handle ergonomics aren't great, just feels odd. I chose this knife because of the 154CM steel and its reputation to take a beating and be a little more versitile for prying and what not than AUS8. I don't see any defects and it does feel like a very solid blade. After a few runs over my Lansky sharpening rod it took a better edge. I was actually surpised it sharpend so quickly.
Overall: Its a minimalist tacticool knife with a pretty wooded handle. It is solid but feels and looks like a chunk of metal with a point. If I lose it I wont cry over it but could have done MUCH better for the $100 price tag. Not worth the 200$ their sites asking or the 130$ found around the internet.
I wanted really badly to like the knife but the only things I can really boast about it arehow easy it was to get a better edge and how heavy duty it feels. I haven't really been able to put it through heavy use but it will need sharpening out of the box.
There weren't any reveiws on the internet on the CQC and I had just hoped it hadn't been that well known, now I know why. With great company's out there like ESEE, Ontario and benchmade why settle? For 30$ more I would have happily gone with the Adamas 375 fixed.
Hope this helps
