Who likes Bear & Son knives? and why? I know they are cheap but are they well made?

Hi,

I've got two that don't impress me at all for fit and finish. They are fine as users. Though I've heard some say they are slowly improving. I hope they do. I would like to try their plain carbon steel someday. But no one handles them around me anymore.

Still, I'd recommend only buying if you can see and touch before buying.

I have two. Upswept skinner is well made. Droppoint Hunter looks like it was slapped together by a Pakistani orphan.

Drop point with stag slabs.

Feathermate

I polished up the blade from satin finish to a mirror. Actually, it is a very nice bushcrafter.

Carry it as my "hunting" knife for gutting.

Is it a $400 custom? NO but it is a nice blade for the price.

I recently bought a couple of Moore Maker Double Lockback Jumbo Trappers on eBay. Previously, these had been made for Moore Maker by Camillus, before they shut down their factory. A few years back, I'd purchased one of the Camillus-made versions of the same knife (very nice and solid). I found out, after the fact, that the new generation of these knives are made by Bear & Son. The reason I bring this up is because there was a noticeable deterioration in fit & finish on the newer knives. One of them, in particular, had a horrible amount of vertical blade play with the main blade locked in the open position. Worst slop I've ever seen in a locking blade. Haven't gotten around to it yet, but I'm tempted to send it back to Moore Maker and let them resolve it one way or the other. I've heard that they have a pretty good reputation in terms of keeping their customers happy, but I have no knowledge of Bear's customer service or warranty coverage for such things.

Long story short, NOT a good first impression of Bear & Son.

A hardware store here locally carries Bear & Sons knives, and they're not selling very well, that's for sure. It's sad, really; with the demise of Schrade and Camillus, Bear is in a great position to 'fill in the gap', so to speak. But some of the fit & finish I've seen on B&S knives is literally worse than Pakistani knives. :grumpy:

thx - cpr

I have had several, All are USA made and were worth what I paid and maybe a bit more.

What really makes me shake my head is that, according to the seller from whom I purchased my (Bear-made) Moore Maker knives, Bear & Sons bought and used the SAME TOOLING that Camillus originally used to make them. But, with a noticeably inferior result. That's really sad.
