Y'all in Phils still Bear71? How is the family looking?

For any who aren't aware there is another Super Typhoon that is going to be making landfall tomorrow in Philippines. Seems to be strengthening to a Category 5. Hasn't landed yet but towns are starting to flood already.

We'll be praying Bear71 and family are safe, or better yet, not there right now.

I am stateside right now but my fiance and child are still there. We don't live on the same island as her family but luckily we have some very loyal and skilled friends that are there to help them if things do get rough. The eye will be going right over our island but our city will be about 30 miles south of the eye. Hopefully that is the way it stays, or moves a little further north. Hate to hope for that because the other areas aren't as well developed for it, but being separated from my family is definitely making me a little selfish at the moment.

Hoping that Bear and his family are safe. Living on the beach during a storm like this is definitely not a good thing, they are calling for a 20+ foot storm surge.

That would be really hard to be that far away from your family during a big storm. I hope everyone is safe.

Imrahil, Bear- prayers out for your families. Mine are far enough North and high enough storm surge is not a problem.

Something folks stateside do not realize is our hurricanes move over land and weaken. In the pacific islands- hurricane does not significantly weaken as part of it is always over water and feeding.

Glad to hear that. Didn't realize there were others around here tied to the Philippines. I'm going crazy right now trying to not constantly google it. I'm hoping that just like Yolanda Iloilo City won't get anything except some minor rainfall and moderate winds. If it gets bad though I will be heading back this week. Don't care if I have to buy a boat in Manila when I land.

Opo pare. I understand completely- until 2 years ago my family there had only one story and did not sleep during storms as the frequently got water. We now have been able to build one large room as a second story as a refuge for them to sleep in during storms. I plan to be living there in 7 years and am trying to figure out how better to be prepared but there are just some things that are so powerful that preperation may give way to avoidance.

Yes, Absolutely... To all our Fiddleback family and their families in the Philippines, your safety will be in our thoughts and prayers!

Disconcerting that he hasn't responded yet. Thoughts and prayers.

Yep, they are just a little bit north of Tacloban. I know Tacloban took it pretty hard again this time. Thankfully this storm decreased in power before it landed, a lot of projections had it at the same strength as Yolanda that landed last year and took 15,000 lives. Government only counted registered voters in the death toll so there are plenty of people claiming upwards of 50,000.

On the upside, there have been no confirmed deaths yet in this storm. Almost everyone was prepared this time around and knew what a storm surge was. Definitely a more healthy respect/fear of the storms now in many places.
