I have had a full beard for years now, and I am constantly battling with dry skin around the mustache and chin area.

I was wondering what you guys use to keep the skin in these areas from drying and flaking? I know Bluebeard's products are highly recommended but it's $14 for 4oz, and not available locally, so it has to be ordered online.

Are there any brands of lotions or beard conditioner's that you guys have had success with?

Thanks much.

:)

I don't grow a beard, but the place I worked at when I lived in Winnipeg all the other guys would go full beard, no trimming from the first day of fall to April 1st. With the really cold weather and it being quite dry there in the winter most of the guys end up with some dryness over the winter. The would just use a good hair conditioner to solve the problem. Its worth a try before dropping money one shipping to try something else.

Your ethnicity and the climate you live in can have a big affect on your skin. It's dry in Southern California, though not as dry as dry in the Winter as it is in other parts of America and Canada. I've begin to experiment with oils in my hair. Unfortunately the one I would recommend is still rather expensive at about $9 for a 4OZ bottle. But it works. It's not snake oil, it's Jojoba oil. If I could afford it, I would message that oil into my scalp after every shower. But I can't. It's expensive. On the other hand, you would just need to use a couple of drops to rub into your bearded face after a shower and you'll be just fine. It's really not much different that using olive oil, minus the smell. You could also try olive oil and see how that works for you. Of course, you may want to try a cosmetic forum instead. I suggest you use a different avatar and name. ;)

Thanks, I'll try a dedicated conditioner. Up until now, I have been using Suave For Men shampoo/conditioner.

An easy, economical, and effective slution for dry skin anywhere is Johnson and Johnson baby oil.

I think that's what you need to do also.

I have had a large beard for a long time and its more of a pain in the butt than when I had hair on my head.

Daily shampoo and a good conditioning is what I have to do. I have to really work it into my skin under the beard when conditioning. Without it I get itchy and flaky.

I use a cheap Vidal Sassoon clipper that runs on AAs. There's only one setting and I clip it every day, it always finds a patch it missed yesterday.

As far as soaps and stuff, I use Dr. Bronner's Magic Castille liquid soap in a Dawn foamer diluted 7:1. The bottle says to dilute 7:1, which I always thought was just stupid. How is soap diluted 7:1 going to get you clean? It runs right off you. Then the foamers came out, and it was a perfect match. It foams right up, and I use 2-3 pumps on my face, beard, and hair. Start with the face, run it up into my hair, then a quick swipe over the beard.

It doesn't get much out of my hair and doesn't put much in, which is what I think you're really supposed to do.

I bought a gallon of the stuff about three years ago now and it's just now getting down to the last two inches of the bottle. I have a foamer in the kitchen for handwashing, one in the shower, one in the bathroom sink upstairs and one downstairs.

That $30 went a looooong way.

Just an update

I've been using a dedicated conditioner and nothing else. It's some Suave brand with cocoa-butter, but it works perfectly. It's like $3.99 per bottle, too.

I just massage a bit in every morning in the shower and the dry skin is completely gone.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
