Bearing Pockets - What tool to use?

Hey guys Im still trying to design and plan out my first folder. Ive got all the parts that I want together and I just need to figure out the counterbore for the bearings. Im going to use the 1/8 (.125) bearings from Alpha Knife Supply. http://www.alphaknifesupply.com/hardware.htm

I Asked this question before I believe about what tool to use if I had no mill, Someone suggested McMaster-Carr counterbores. So I contacted them about it because There website is confusing and I didnt want to buy the wrong tool. Thanks god because I was about to spend $50 on a tool which wasnt right. After recently talking to them they are telling me that they dont sell a counterbore tool that has a body diameter of 5/16 with a pilot hole filler piece thats 1/8. A counterbore that size would be perfect because it would give me .0005 clearance for the bearing to sit in there. But now there telling me they dont sell this tool.

So my question to all you wizards out there is what counterbore or even tool do you use specifically to drill a pocket out for the AKS 1/8 bearings?

Thanks again for all the help guys.

Usaknifemaker.com sells a 5/16 countersink but unfortunately it comes with a 1/4 interchangeable pilot (and its out of stock just now). They also sell loose 1/8 pilots but I cant find information on the site about the diameter of the pilots shaft, of the 5/16 countersink. I would call them and ask if the two fit, before ordering.
Or ask Chuck at AKS where to find the countersink. Both Alpha and usaknifemaker are good to deal with.

Thanks Gody, do you know if there is an email I can email Chuck, Im going on the road this weekend and it would be easier to talk to him through that. When I go on the website it says send an Email for ordering, and Email is blue like I should click it, but when I do nothing happens.

PM me and I'll tell you where to get these. I don't think I can mention it openly unless they're a sponsor.

Thanks,
Sam

Do yourself a favor and get the carbide tipped counter bore w/ removable pilot inserts. High speed steel counter bores are dog sh*t on blade steel and titanium. I have had HSS bits explode on me and ruin the bearing pocket.

On the HSS tools you had problems with, do you know what brand they were? You were doing this on soft steel, no HT, right?

Titanium is fairly soft, but it must be cut aggressively or it will rapidly work harden and destroy tools.

Thanks,
Sam

There's a maker that sells on the exchange, Gene Iverson,- that advertises making custom
counterbores.
Ken.

I busted one of the HSS counter bores on usaknifemaker (11/16" with 1/4" pilot for Micro Bearings) I was cutting slow and aggressive in both titanium and annealed 3V, 5160, and 154cm. The bit dulled out in 4-5 cuts and exploded on some 5160. It's not usaknifemakers fault, HSS just wont work on super abrasive steels even annealed and soft.

These are my new carbide counter bores from McMaster.

I've swapped to the GTC all stainless bearing cages from Jantz for .25" pivots w/ .078" 440c bearings. MUCH better design with .5" counter bore (smaller is cheaper).

Thanks for all the help guys, and Will I dont think McMaster-Carr sells the counterbore that Im looking for. Im trying to find one that has a 5/16 head and a 1/8 pilot to get a .3125 pocket but when I emailed and asked them (because there site kinda confusing to me) they said that they didnt make that tool, witch it strange. Im still looking for a counterbore that size but havnt been able to find anything, if anyone sees anything please let me know.

I'm looking at the right tool on McMaster right now. Tool # 31125A23 (5/16" carbide head with 1/4" shank and 3/32" pilot shank size.) $46.92

You will also need tool #3103A11 (Steel changable pilot w/ 3/32" shank and 1/8" head) $5.54
