Hey, I am a high schooler doing yard work over the summer and I have come across a few instances in my jobs where a good knife that can take abuse would be nice for cutting woody weeds or digging out roots... The most I could spend would be $50 but that is flexible. Thanks in advance for the help!

Pruning shears and/or a pruning saw would be a good idea too depending on the amount and the size of the wood you're working with. I wouldn't use a knife for digging and I'm sure that the people you're working for would appreciate a cleaner cut on the plants that you may be trimming. A knife can't do that.

Mostly I've been pulling weeds, some are if the woody variety and need to be cut to get rid if them...

Cold Steel Voyager, any size, any shape. Good price, sturdy knife.

Maybe a medium sized fixed blade would be good for digging. I'm not familiar with fixed blades, but that seems like a good option.
Boker Plus has many styles of fixed blades in your price range. That is my recommendation #2.

The Buck vantage series and the Buck bantam series
Are good work/beater folder in my experience
But for doing yard work I would get a fixed blade
And a leatherman. Like a leatherman rebar and a buck 119 or
Bucklite max

Buck Nighthawk. My favorite fixed. ( Mine is older, thicker, does not have the Oxygen tank holes, satin finish and Chuck Buck personally signed it)
Hell of a knife. The blade is a little under 5" and the handle is the most comfortable I have ever used. It will cut through anything and would be perfect for digging the weeds up. $58, depending on where you go.

I would use my Condor Bushlore which runs aboutr #30-$35. If that knife does not grab you, consider another Condor blade uncluding one of their excellent machetes.

Mora Robust, Kershaw Clash, Case Sodbuster or Opinel garden knife. I think the kershaw is the most expensive @ $25.

That's a good tip on the Buck Nighthawk. Having said that, these guys around here know what they're talking about, and you might want to consider their other suggestions like a machete or other tools. If you are set on a knife, I won't call you off of that at all, and an all around great choice if you want a folder is the Buck 110,or a Buck Duke. Both well within your budget, and will take a licking a keep on...cutting or whatever.

Good luck with your choice, glad to hear about a young fella working nowadays.

Maybe something purpose built for digging like that hori thing, but no general use knife is suitable for digging roots. That's why we invented shovels, hoes, etc. and preferably under $10 since it's going to get worked over by rocks and dirt.

Above ground the machete is king.

AM Leonard Soilknife. About $20. This thing is made for what you are doing. It's knife steel, not just soft metal like trowels. Made it Italy, I think 420 steel. Just got a 2nd one this year. We do a lot of HARD landscaping. These are the best. Sometimes you will move more dirt with this thing faster than if you had a shovel, and those serrations are SHARP, roots are no problem. Nothing compares. You wont regret it. Thread over.
