Hey guys I've been looking to buy a used Spyderco Paramilitary to test out the knife and see if I should buy it new and I've had little luck. So the question came up of what the heck do all of you knife nuts do with those used up and beaten EDCs? Do you keep em? Sell em for cheap? etc...I cycle my EDCs so none really show any signs of hard use, I guess haven't been collecting knives long enough (4years now) All responses are appreciated.

Man, I don't have the heart to get rid of them. I occasionally get em out for old times sake, take a trip down memory lane, clean'em up keep'em sharp...

I don't sell the retired ones, I just put them away with all the rest of the stuff...

I use a knife until it no longer works. If it something that fails like a lock or spring in an axis lock, I send it to BM for repair.

If I break a blade (such as a case pocket knife) I grind it to a usefull shape.

Most of the time, I do not abuse my knives. Right tool for the right job. I have abused some knives in the past, and will in the future if the need arises. The fact of the matter is a knife is a cutting tool and if it is used like it is designed, it will last you a life time.

I definitely agree, but I mean what do you do with the knives that show signs of use. Like tarnished or scratched blades/handles? And I mean how can anyone break a high quality knife, I've never done it.

When a knife shows signs of use, then it makes me happy. How can you say you love something if you never take it out of your pocket and use it. I have a few case knives that are pretty worn and they have a dark patina, but they still cut just as good as the first day they came out of the box. I think they may even cut better because you have thinned the edge down to the way you sharpen which gives you better slicing abilities. I am about to put one of those old knives in my pocket as I head for work.

Between my father, brother, and handful of nephews I normally end up gifting a knife before it shows much wear. Some however I just keep in the EDC rotation, sometimes a knife might be carried for a day or a week then I change...no set pattern really. I almost always have a pocket clip knife and a slipjoint with me. I see no reason to retire a knife like this Remington (which belonged to my great grandfather) just because it is showing signs of wear.

While none of my pocket clips knives are this old I hope my grand-kids will cherish and use them long after I am gone.

I keep them. After months or years of no usage, its almost like having a new knife again to pick it up and start using it.

If you think you'd like a Paramilitary, just get a new or lightly used one. I'm sure you'll like it. If it won't hold up to your tests in daily usage, you may be using the wrong tool... ;)

For sure but I was thinking more in the way of how it fits in my hand...the military fits perfectly the smaller para may not, I have larger hands...I dont abuse knives at all. And from where would I get a lightly used one...I've had little luck on the for sale portion of BF. If anyone has one and is willing to sell PM me?

I keep mine. By the time they have years of use I am too attached to them to do anything else.

everyone of my knives, all carried and used never what i think abused, but all of mine have scratches, Light battle scarring:) i love old slip joints so i'm used to fawning over a knife that alot of other people would think needed replaced, depends on your perspective i suppose. all but one in my small collection have been in pocket, etc. Agree with everybody else here an un-abused knife will last longer than we will, i have some slip joints that predate WW2, multiple owners/users and still usable to me and will be for my son... if taken care of who knows how long one can go:D:thumbup:
