i was wondering how many people in BF carry knives as self defence tools. knife only? -or as a back up to a firearm? or not at all? or maybe someone could point me in the direction of the thread that this has already been talked about? thank you in advance.

No one carries them as self defense tools. We all carry knives as tool for all sorts of things like cutting stuff. If the chips were down we might be forced to use our tool for self defense but no one will state that their primary reason is self defense.

I sure won't.

Hello Corpsman! I am nobody. Have I or will I or am I carrying a knife for self-defense-Absolutley. I have sissors and kitchen cookware. I also have at least one knife about my person for anything more than "cutting stuff". It is not the kinda thing discussed on the Buck threads typically but I am man enough to admit this old world ain't a fairy tale to be sugar-coated. Down the way in my building is an apartment that gets lots of traffic, the kind that just parks with the engine running and then leaves in a few moments. At times a 120 or 119 or a 500 or a 110 or a 124 or a .....will get stuffed into my belt or pocket when I retreive my mail from between the buildings. Am I a paranoid para-military? I hardly think so. Am I responsible to myself? Absolutley. To shun your inquiry makes me think that some may find it more important to hide than let the light shine. Fortunately enough, we do tend to see the lighter side of our Buck uses and enjoy the commaraderie here on the site. I also Cowboy Action shoot and there no one disputes proficiency with firearms as not having practical applications, however, not being monsters there or here, the fun side is so much more enjoyable, isn't it? In a word, yes, I carry a knife for self-defense.

In areas where there are few legal ways to carry a firearm, then I believe a knife is the next choice in many peoples minds for SD. Today there are pepper sprays and stun guns, but they are often illegal to carry, so some form of pocket knife becomes the last option for someone to carry for SD. A knife is almost never a good choice but it is better than an empty hand when the chips are down. Most people on BF view their knives as tools ( as I do), but if needed you could always hit some one with a hammer, and in turn you could defend yourself with a knife that is other wise a tool. As a former NYC LEO, I will say two things: the most common weapons charges are for beer bottles and kitchen knives ( once used as weapons in a aassault), and knives can be very deadly but they do NOT have quick stopping power so they are a poor defense weapon.

That's why we have a search function :p

Knives as a self defense weapon is a poor idea. With a folder you have to worry about getting it out and opened without dropping it, then once it is opened you have to worry about not letting go of it.

Fixed blades, while you don't have to worry with opening them, you do have to worry about getting it out of a sheath. Same with neck knives, but then you have to fish it out from under your shirt.

My opinion on self defense is this:

Learn to talk your way out of a situation or give the bad guy what they want. Most muggers aren't intent on hurting you, they just want your money. Introducing a knife will just put them more on edge and turn on their defensive mechanism.

If talking doesn't do any good, just run. Your feet are the best self defense tool you've got and no one has to teach you how to use them. If running doesn't work then you've always got fists.

For people who are truly paranoid about going out of their house unarmed (and I feel sorry for them), if you live in a state that allows concealed carry of a handgun, then by all means get a gun. Just be prepared to kill whatever you point it at and live with the consequences.

I carry two knives every day. One for food and one for whatever else needs cutting. Only once have I ever opened a knife in a sticky situation and that was to protect someone I loved, not myself. I know how to take care of myself without resorting to weapons, but all bets are off if you threaten someone I care about.

well i have seen conversation here on this: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=685
and here also...: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=731
well ... here goes ...
i carred a 110 as profesional use tool and have for years...
now i carry as a looker and light use...
would i use one in self defense ... yes i would but
as stated above "they are a poor defense weapon"
but they are a weapon of last resort as even a rock is...
more knives have been used to save lives then take one (MHO)
the leagondary sanbar fight knife was a long knife design for
meat cutting use and not intended as a fighter ...
it was a tool of last resort...
not that there are not mil use knives... again more a tool then any thing..
this thread should be moved ( again MHO)

10-4.
As I have been asked by sheeple or a Five-O or two, "why do you carry that weapon/knife?".
My reply is always, "Oh, do you mean this utility tool? In case I need to cut some hoses or other things on my scoot."

Lots of folks here apparently carry a blade for SD.

Blades for Self Defence is a really really really common topic.

Do this:
Click search
Click advanced search
enter the search term "defence" no quotes
select "search titles only"
Select "blade discussion forum"
clear the box, "search sub forums"
Click search

I do not carry a blade for SD. To me a blade is a tool, not a weapon. If I thought I needed a weapon, I would pack a gun. Using a knife for SD without training in its use is witless.

No knife fer self deefence, I carry a slingblade, some folks call it a Kaiser blade, I call it a sling blade.......mphhh!

I legally carry a gun for SD - when so inclined. Usually, because my wife, who is a bit younger than me, is with me - call it a 'group protection plan'. I carry a user (tool) and a 'show' (ego) folder knife... and, many times, an assisted opening type as a 'last ditch protection' in my back pocket. I still can be found with 'just' a SAK in a front pocket... but that pretty 110AG is in a back pocket! Oddly, I know several otherwise 'normal' folks who have survival stuff - including black rifles - horded away. I guess it's true... "I am not paranoid... I don't care what those voices say!".
