Beautiful places

How about we get a discussion about some great places near each of us?

The place and where it is!

I live in Northern Al, and three relatively GREAT "wild" places are close.

In northwestern AL, is the Sipsey wilderness, a part of Bankhead national forest. I tromped all over it as a youth, and it is a truly amazing place. On the northern tail end of the Application mountain range, it has ancient trees, including one of the southern most stands of hemlock trees. There is also a lot of native American history here.

The Smokey Mt. National park is within a few hours drive. Pretty self explanatory.

In northeastern AL, lies one of the most beautiful areas in the southern Appalachia. Buck's Pocket State park. Huge Gorge and wilderness, close by is Noccalula falls, (the recent heavy rain had it looking like a mini Niagra) These last areas have been considered for National Park status on several occasions.

Give us some "can't miss" places that are near you, or that you have visited.

I live in Northern California. We are surrounded by the Sierra Mountains, Giant Redwood Forests (Giant Redwood Trees in our Yard), And a rocky Pacific Coast Beach within 45 minutes leisure drive. So I can go from Snow, to Forests, to Beach all within 3 hours from one end to the next. Traveling East to West not north to south. Almost forgot the wine industry. We are completely surrounded by vineyards. Wine around here is almost like Cool Aid. It is all over the place. You can also pick left over grapes and other fruits from the orchards. This year we got maybe 60 pounds of pears, and at least that much in table grapes and wine grapes, plums, and black berries. They use black berry bushes as boundaries for the vineyards. Make nice eating while out hiking.

I'm sure we all have a similar place close by?

Yes, I figure that is true too, I have a similar type locale in mind too. However, I'm thinking of a different kind of place, one typically found on a map.

A certain farm, bordering a certain state park in southern Minnesota. For the last 4 years I've been lucky enough to be welcome to relax, target shoot, and hunt there.

The owners are of the most caring, generous people on the planet. I've been lucky to be accepted into their family when I married their grandaughter.

The time spent there is nothing short of priceless.

I now have three "6+ pointers", and counting.

I'm just waking up in the Colorado Rockies getting ready to go hit the ski slopes!!!

Wow!
.. sounds like an awesome place to set up base camp.. or a home. :)

Added a pic above :D

One of the areas I hunt each year (New England region of NSW) holds a very special place in my heart :)

Cradle Mountain in Tasmania... and the lake below... !

Is that where they made "The Hunter" movie? If it is, that is an awesome place!

San Diego has many beautiful places to see also, I can go up to 7 thousand feet into the Cuyamaca forest and lake, into Julian, home of the best apple pie, those roads up there are a motorcyclist dream, I used to ride up the mountains every weekend until my back deteriorated so badly I can't do it anymore, then we have the awesome beaches from the border up to San Clemente, Coronado, La Jolla, etc.
we also have the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum, The Star of India, The San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Balboa Park, tons of museums like the Aerospace, Seaport Village, the Gas Lamp Quarter, Little Italy, dang, I didn't realize how many cool places we have down here, and of course the weather is just perfection, right now it is sunny with a very nice 69 degree breeze; the coldest it got last night was 38 degrees, about 6 C.

Then we have Tijuana at the border, drug cartel capital of the southern American hemisphere, and the most crossed over border in the world; imagine sitting in line for a few hours just to cross the border back into the USA, I hate it, and that is not an attraction or beautiful place but it deserves to be mentioned for the many tunnels they have discovered for drug smuggling operations, some of them as long as a thousand meters long. I wonder how many middle easterners have crossed that way into our country.

Sorry, I got sidetracked; California has some beautiful places indeed; Northern California is beautiful for sure. And I forgot the famous carne asada burritos from Lolita's Taco Shop. Happy new year guys!

Yes mate, parts of the movie were filmed around Cradle Mtn National Park :)

Thanks Andy; man that is a beautiful place; I didn't know it was that nice until I watched the movie in Netflix about three weeks ago; I couldn't believe my eyes; you're lucky to live near that place.

I am not close to that spot mate, sadly, I just loved it !!! I was there in late 14 for a week and could easily see myself retiring there !!

I was kinda partial to Torrey Pines (sp?) when I was out there briefly a few years ago. And Seaport Village, like you mentioned.

I believe there is beauty in even the worst of places. You just to know where to look. We often get bogged down with the negative aspect of things and not take the time to see the beauty in everything in nature, regardless of location.

This is the view from Grandfather Mountain, the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Parkway just outside of Boone North Carolina. (MT. Rogers is taller but not considered part of the Blue Ridge Parkway)

The lake below

Cascade falls just outside of West Jefferson North Carolina

This area is about 4.5 hours from home. My wife and I went there for our honeymoon. I'll add some more pictures soon.

More pics
This is Grandfather Mountain from Rough Ridge Outcrop

This is another view from the outcrop and in the background you can see the viaduct which was set in place with helicopters to avoid damage to the mountains
