James Mattis ordered a matched pair of 15 inch Sirupatis, right and left, and here they are. He asked that they be made and marked by Kumar. Let's see how close BirGorkha came to making this matched pair.
I don't have mic or calipers so this is eyeball with steel rule but is is very close.
overall length is within 1/16
blade length is within maybe .025
thickness is within .010 or .015
width is within .040 or so
weight is within 1 ounce
Fit is perfect on both. Both have the HI super habaki bolster but one is a little longer due to horn variation giving very near the same handle length. Finish is near but not quite magic stone mirror on both -- identical finish. Hardness is the same on both -- 59 to 60.
For handcrafted stuff these two khukuris are for all practical purposes identical.
Scabbards do vary -- one is left and one is right with different design on tooling. Frogs are 100 year HI super.
Now here is the kicker. Because James is a good customer with a lot of knives on order BirGorkha expedited this left and right order for him -- doing us all a big favor. Right?
So Kesar made and marked one khukuri and Kumar made and marked the other, essentially defeating the reason and purpose for the order. But the kamis thought, "What difference could it possibly make who makes the knives if they match?"
I get so damned frustrated with these guys I want to throw in the towel and go live back in Girard, Kansas rent and hassle free and fish all day in the old strip pits and get drunk with my brother on Saturday nights and enjoy my retirement.
But then I think about those poor kamis and their families who will probably starve if I don't do what I'm doing and I look again and marvel at how close these two kamis who work side by side came to the matched pair and I take pix and post them and ask James what to do.
James, we can start over again with VERY explicit instructions and a lot more swearing and hell raising from me and I'll put this matched set up for sale here for $150 delivered to the buyers' door. Or, you can take these for the same price with the story and take your best shot.
Your call.
