After years of dreaming about it I finally went ahead and ordered a real Pipe Hawk from Bill and Becky Keeler (Beaver Bill Forging Works).

It is truly a work of art.

I ordered a 1750 English Pipe Hawk model with a "Hi-Carbon" bit forge welded into the blade end and chose a stained Osage handle. I also purchased an extra handle made of Curly Ash just to have. They both have a great look to them and I think I'd be happy with either one.

The shape that he gives the handle feels great in the hand. Almost like it was made specifically for me.

It didn't take me long to figure out what knife I wanted to pair up with it.

It has a 6.5" blade and is 12" overall.

Here it is with a hawk from Vec and Erica @ Equinox Coronado, and Granfors Bruk Small Forest Ax for size comparison.

GB SFA handle is 19.5" long.
Beaver Bill handle is 18" long.
Vec's Gen1 handle is 19.25" long.

This thing is awesome! I am seriously thinking about ordering another one.

:D

Congrats, it looks like very nice work, and gotta love osage (though I wouldn't dye it personally). Must ask, though, what is the reason for the haft tapering to a point? Not sure I've ever seen that before.

Is it actually a functioning pipe? Do you smoke from the butt of the handle? I'm intrigued. Also, What is the little peg sticking into the top of the handle? I don't know anything about pipe-hawks

It looks like a functioning pipe. The plug in the end could be removed to clean the pipe. Time to pack a bowl and light her up haha.

It is a fully functional Pipe Hawk. I haven't used the pipe yet. There's a tobacco shop near where I work. I may have to swing by there on my lunch break.

As for the handle/haft tapering to a point. I'll admit that when I first unwrapped it, I too wondered about the degree of taper, but the more I handle it the more I realize I wouldn't change a thing about it. Bill really does know what he's doing. The tip is flat and about .5" diameter with what looks like a hollow metal rod inserted. In all of the pictures I've looked at of Pipe Hawks they pretty much all seem to taper. Some more than others.
