I just recieved some great photo's from Jared Place (placeknives)

I thought I'd share some of his photo's of his new custom Dave Beck version of the Woodlore knife.

he had Dave Beck change some things as you can see. Here's the specs:

-4 1/2" blade
-9 1/2" overall
-Full 3/16" thick
-O-1 steel
-Differentially heat treated (check out that temper line!)
-Fully tapered tang
-Stamped on one side with my initials "JP"
-Black linen Micarta handles with brass and stainless Loveless style handle bolts
-Sheath can be worn around the neck Scandinavian style or on the belt

Jared, Great looking blade, please let us know how it performs.

omg that is a lovely knife i wish i could buy one i got my wsk from mr beck eariler this year and love it

Glad you guys like it, I think it came out really great. It makes a nice companion to my WSK.

I can't wait to get it out in the woods and use it.

This is actually the 2nd one he made for me. I had him make the first one out of 5/32" thick stock but after receiving the knife I thought that was too thin. He was great about the whole thing. He liked the 5/32" one so much that he took it back and is going to use it as his hunting knife this year. He then made me this one at no extra charge.

What a great guy. Can't wait to see some of the Marbles style hunters he's working on.

Thanks again,
Jared

Looks like a good knife to me. Its design points to utility and would probably make the chores easier out in the sticks. :)

placeknives do you use your wsk alot next weekend im taking mine out

I don't get out as much as I'd like, but I have used my WSK a bit on a couple of camping trips.

I've used it to split wood, make figure 4 deadfall traps, whittle, make tent stakes, cut up food, stuff like that.

Hopefully I can get out camping one more time this summer.

Very nice.

That is the temper line you can see in the first pic?

Did he every get his website back up? Where is he located?

Thanks for sharing.

Man, Dave Beck sure is a very talented knife maker, I sure hope him a speedy recovery, so he can get back to making knives full time. I have a WSK on order with him. ;)

Terry,
Yes that is the temper line in the first pick. The blade is edge quenched so that it has a fully sharpened cutting edge with the spine left soft. That keeps the blade flexible yet it will still hold an edge. That's what I love about O-1 steel.

Dave is located in Sinking Spring, PA and he has no plans to put his website back up at this time. He's trying to recover from a neck operation that unfortunately has left him almost worse off than he was before the surgery.

He's trying to get caught up on the massive amounts of WSK orders he has. He told me that he wishes he could go full time, but that it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

At any rate I'm honored to call him a friend and was very fortunate to have worked with him on the 3 knives he made for me, 2 of which were pure customs.

Place,
I sure would love to see your collection of Beck knives, any chance of us posting your collection here?

Ron

Jared,

Would you please pass on to Dave best wishes and prayers (from all of us here on the Wilderness Forum) for a speedy and full recovery? He's a great knifemaker and a great guy from what I have heard from everyone who knows him.

Thanks,

~Brian.
