Looking into acquiring a 77, how much would you pay for one? Is $300 too much for a limited run?

Maybe email one of the mods? I dont think you are suppose to ask about prices without a paid membership. However I could be wrong though. Regardless good choice I hear the 77 is a really nice knife.

Yeah, pretty sure you have to have a paid membership to ask value. That seams high but I've never looked into the 77

Pretty much what they said. Asking without a paid membership is one of the BFC rules. Which we must abide.

Yeah, I've been debating a paid membership for a while now. I guess it's about time. Mods, can I get a mulligan on the question?

depends if it was a factory second or an original. Ka Bar sold the seconds for $208 shipped. They are wonderful knives and are getting harder to find.

Are the originals more desirable/expensive? Is there a way to tell them apart?

I have a factory second that sombody hit a little hard with the grinder and has a mark on the blade, and I have another one that is perfect in every way, but the box was mangled. The fit and finish was very different between the two of them on the micarta also. Had to do a bunch of sanding on the grinder marked blade's Micarta to get it to fit flush. As far as I know KaBar didn't do anything to the blades physically to indicate they were seconds.

you can pretty much tell the Camillus from the KaBar at a glance :)

some of the very last 77s to go out might be deemed seconds, due to some variou marring, but it's only cosmetic, and not an issue if you intend to use them.

value. well, BF rules prohibits that. *out* sub-forum rules esp prohibit asking value on various Beckers, esp for seller types thinking they have a collectible and wanting to know "how much they can get". smiting offense :D

that said. goto ePrey and places, and look around. you'll see what things are worth. look to the buying forums. see what people sell for. wait. haggle. pounce.

a big chunk of limited s30v steel? you're going to pay for it, no two ways about it.

Thanks all for the advice, I had been waiting for one to show up on the bay for some time. If you search Becker 77 or BK 77, 99 out of 100 times you'll find micarta scales. Then one day the knife was listed, so I asked. I placed the starting and only bid and won it 5 days later. it wasn't cheap but any means, and is now the most expensive knife in my collection. Part of me want to keep it as pristine as possible and let it ride in the safe for a while. the rest of me want to put it through its paces.

I'd be interested in knowing how many people actually use them? i guess it's like wine, you might have a old bottle from some french chateau, but to know what it taste like is something else... does that make sense?

If I had a 77 it would take the place of my BK7 as my main belt knife. It wasn't meant to be pampered and put in a safe, it was meant to be used hard and put away wet.

Okay point taken. Thought of doing a catch and release on the BK77, but I think its going to hang out for a bit. My school schedule is pretty heavy, 21 units, and the police academy (hopes and prayers) starts in July, so there may not be much time for a field eval but I'll try to gett something posted in the coming months. Thanks again,
