Decided to get my wife a new knife for in the kitchen, meat and cheese duty, etc. I figured why not another cookbook to go along with it! I was also going to make her a new knife block dedicated to the BK15 but was afraid it wouldn't be the right thing to do because of limited counter space. So that meant a sheath for covering the blade. Neither leather or kydex seemed right for this application so I used wood. The 'sheath block' has a decent friction fit for keeping the knife in place and can go in a drawer. Hope she likes everything, I think she will.

That is AMAZING! Is the scabbard made from the same wood as the handles? If she isn't happy with that set I do believe it is a moral imperative that you kick her to the curb!

Oh no, the handles (scales) were made by the one and only tommythewho and I think are Brazilian walnut. I used some oak from the local home improvement store. But since the scabbard (I like that) turned out well, I could see sourcing some of the same type of wood as he uses and doing another, maybe with some curves where is meets the scales.

If you do end up sourcing the wood to make another one to match the the scales you might want to also slide a neodymium magnet into the wood so that it acts as a retention for the blade. The one thing to remember about that is that neodymium magnets are directional so make sure you mount it the correct way.

By the way, I have NO idea if scabbard is the correct word to use there. Just when I think of sheaths I think of something to carry the blade in not necessarily just a sheath protector.

Thank you. Good idea!! OK gonna have to build some more scabbards.

Yeah that is pretty awesome, very unique. Looks great and functional well done man.

Looks awesome! She should love that knife, stripped, good cutting knife, beautiful handle and sweet "scabbard"!

Question, I'm looking to strip mine just to the ricasso like you did, how did you keep the stripper from going beyond where you wanted to strip? masking tape?

Yep, I used some blue painters tape after cleaning the area with iso alcohol. That and being careful how far up you apply the stripper, you want to just get as close as you can to the tape line without touching it. Most strippers are gels so it's pretty easy with a small brush.

Nice job, very good looking BK15, gonna strip my BK15 and BK5 and have read that the stripper can get under the painters tape, guess I need to have a slow steady hand in the application.

Sweet. And that sheath is awesome.....

Yeah, some guys are just sloppy and it gets thru the tape:D

Very nice work! Did you take any construction pics?

Thanks everyone. She liked all the gifts! Of course, she is great.

PS: sorry no construction pics. I will say though, the oak with it's wide varied grain, well the seams just disappear, looks like one piece of wood when its actually 3 pieces glued together, I had her fooled.

That looks fantastic! I really like the contrast between the stripped blade, the coating and the Tommy handles. And that custom scabbard (I think that's a thing now) is just amazing! Massive props buddy. What a cool gift. The whole kit looks truly personalized. I'm really glad she likes it..
