Head north-east for an hour from my home and you arrive at my go to knife shop. The Becker BK 2 is $84, the BK 7 is $89. Please advise me on the proper direction as to which one to purchase. The useage will entail simple day hike/single night activities.

Thanks

The Bk2 is a tank and Is excellent for firewood and batoning, and It's good at other stuff too. The 7 is lighter and is a better slicer, It would be good for firewood too.

I'm not much help, but at least you'll get to hold them before you buy. Check out the sheaths also, they might be the deciding factor.

I might recommend the 7 over the 2 for hiking....

That's what I was going to say. It's easier to just take $200 for knives and get both of them now. Sometimes, instant gratification is best. LOL.

I think the 2 is a knife for itself, it is very thick, not the best cutter, but indestructible and probably one of the best knives for batoning out there (at least the best that I've tried yet). If you're like me and love to whittle little stuff, practice featherstick making or other things that require a super sharp and thin edge (especially a scandi grind) you should pack a Mora, a folder or *insert your favorite expensive custom bushcraft knife here*.

I think the 7 would be a better allround and day hike blade, the 2 is so special that I don't really know when to carry it, since I almost always carry a hatchet/small axe when going out into the woods. If I were to be at camp for a few days, I'd pack my hatchet and leave it where the wood is processed, strap the 2 to my belt (remind me to show you guys my homegrown belt carry system for the stock sheath) and split, chop and pry anything that I need to with it. Carrying both around in the woods? That's about 3lbs worth of edged too, plus my Mora neck knife. Too much.

Don't get me wrong, If I were to choose one edged tool to use for a month out in the bush, it'd be the BK-2, because I can hammer it through knotty oak and not think for a second that it's gonna break. If I were to choose two tools, it would be a Mora and my axe. Makes sense to me.

I would go with the 7 for hiking, its alot lighter and a bit more knife....

JW, at that price range, I would get the BK7. It will suit your needs fine, and the price is comparable to what you can find on the internet. That price for the BK2 seems a little steep to me, considering online you can get a BK2 delivered for around $65.

Good choice either way.

those are canadian maple dollars :)

which? hard to say. get them in hand, and then find out :) get a smaller companion knife too, like a mora.

BK2 without one moment's hesitation. As moose said, that price seems a bit steep but man, is that a great knife.

I live in Canada and that is by far the cheapest price we see for it up here. I could do the online route but I'm a fan of holding the blade in my hand before purchasing...plus I like knowing that the blade is in mint condition, symmetrical grind etc..

I am yet one more vote on carrying a mora. I have handled both and bought the BK2. I don't find it heavy for hiking or backpacking but then again, I was carrying a SP10 on my hip prior, which weighs over 2 lbs. I like a thick rhino like knife. So my vote is for the 2.

Been tossing this around myself but for rescue work, I'm leaning toward the 2 for shear thickness.

Dunno about the 7, but a BK2 is pretty heavy for a one-nighter unless you know for a fact you'll be doing wood processing or some other heavy lifting. It's a great tool, a real beast, but also kind of a commitment due to the weight. I'd say it's a great camp knife if you want to be slightly over-prepared.

simple day hike/single night activities

That doesn't really sound like BK2 territory to me; this is serious iron. Honestly, I can see the upcoming mini-camp tweener being a much, much better light-duty backpack knife.

And truck knife.

And boat knife.

I've had the BK2, 10, 7, 9, 11, 13. Out of these I kept the BK9/13 & the BK11. the BK2 is one of the toughest, solid made knives I've handled, I liked it but I found that for the weight&length the BK9 paired with the BK 11 was the perfect combo ! My .02 is get the BK7,it's also a very tough knife thats gonna take what ever you throw at it & it's a little lighter & longer to boot !

There is no right answer. Both are good knives.
The BK2 is my go to knife.
