I'm interested in the Becker BK-7. It looks like a great knife and at a price I can afford. I would use it to camp with as well as feild dressing deer. I would like to hear some opinions on this knife. Will it hold a edge? How hard is it to sharpen? I also would not mind getting suggestions on other knives in the price range. THanks

Got only the bk9. bk10 is in the mail. I do like the bk9 a lot, it does hold an edge and is one of the easiest knives to sharpen.I am comfortable with the handle, wich is the only issue on beckers. For a camp knife the bk7 should be perfect,- right now I am not sure if the bk10 I orderd is the right choice, I like it`s compactness but I`m concerned about the wide tip/penetration. Another good knife in that price range is a tough find. The RAT7 is a little more money but gets good reviews. A KABAR is pretty good although not as tough as the bk7.

I have a RAT-7 in D2 steel. Great knife wouldnt change a thing. It is easy to handle and makes light work of most outdoor chores. I have used it to skin deer, rabbit, rattle snake, and trout. Cuts brush and limbs easily. I took it out for a weekend when I first got it and I was impressed with its ability for not having a heavy blade. Keeps a great edge, not hard to resharpen. However it is about twice as much as a Becker. In my mind worth every penny. I found mine online for about $110 (including s&h) I decided against the Becker because I found the handles to be uncomfortable. You can buy Micarta replacement handles that are supposed to be very good, but I dont know where. Hope this helps

go to the camillus forum and do a search on "bk7" in the "search this forum" box top right of the page. you will find a slew of stuff. you can do the same thing in the survival forum. my two cents.

Beckers are excellents knives for their price. Within the same price and function range, consider the Cold Steel SRK if you want something lighter weight and easier to carry.

I have a BK7 & a BK9. Love em both.
The BK9 is awesome but a little heavy for belt carry, I often carry either the 9 or My SRKW Battle Rat strapped to the side of my bergen, but If just out for the day & travelling light(er) I use the BK7.
Its a tight fit but you can also get an Altoids tin into the pouch. I also ranger-band a space blanket to the sheath below the pouch & finish it off with a paracord wrap.
One possible project will be to hollow out the middle section of the handle, fill in the middle grip-screw hole with epoxy & create a small survival compartment inside the handle, probably just to contain a spark-rite & some vaseline balls.
My next purchase will be a Necker, in fact, Sod it, when Ive finished on here, Im gonna order one online!

The BK7 is superb, get one!

The BK7 is a great value ! It's my truck knife and is easy to sharpen, holds an edge well , a tough knife. It will do for dressing out a deer but it's a bit large for that.

As far as the Ranger and Becker knife in the 7" range, both good knives for the money. Which would I stake my life on? The RD without hesitation. .25" thick flat ground 5160 is near bombproof. Micarta slabs, versatile blade shape, not to mention that it is backed by a great warantee and a great guy (Justin Gingrich). I would spend a little extra if you know what I mean? :D

You could also wait for Doug Ritter's "RSK MkII/BK12", made by Camillus/Becker Knife & Tool.

Blade Style: Drop point, high grind
Blade Length: 6 inches
.188" 0170-6C carbon steel or CPM S30V stainless
Becker Trademark GV6H handles
Black epoxy powdercoat or stonewashed
Variable Balance: Neutral or blade forward (Magic!)
Sheath: Ambidexterous, ballistic nylon with Kydex insert, storage pocket

You can see a prototype picture here:

It is the one in the middle --- BK10 (Crewman) on top, BK2 (Companion) on the bottom.

I'm waiting very patiently, but hoping it comes out soon. Doug's goal was for it to be available by the holiday season. I currently have a BK10 and really like the size/weight and even like the handle and sheath (some don't), but was never thrilled with the tip shape.

I continue to dream that some day BK&T might make a smaller knife based upon the BK11 blade thickness and shape, but about 1" longer, AND with a nice scaled handle (one a bit less robust than their bigger knives).
