I've just ordered a BK-7, which seems like a great all-around utility, camping, outdoor knife.

I've toyed with the idea of getting a BK-9 too. Lots of folks here have lauded its ability as a chopper. What I'm wondering is how the BK-9 stacks up against, say, a machete? Is the BK-9 machete-like? Or just a big old knife?

Seems to me that with the BK-7 and a decent 18" to 22" machete (was thinking Martindale or Tramontina here), I'd be pretty much set for outdoor work. Thoughts?

It's pretty much just a big knife. Heavy with a thick edge - Busse like, but a fraction of the price since it doesn't use magic steel.
A must have big chopper.

It's just a matter of preference. BK9 is two inches longer than BK7 (blade length). It is big, strong and dependable.

Many people like blades like that. I am one of them. BK7 would probably cover most camp chores you can think of but BK9 will be useful if you need that extra edge.

There's really no harm getting the BK9 because it is quite affordable. :)

Good choice on the BK7, no better knife even close to it's price. The same with the BK9. The BK9 is longer and thicker with a more forward balance, all leading to a much better chopper. It will chop much more robustly than a machete, but won't have the reach. I wouldn't go over 18" on a machete though, and would suggest you consider less unless you know what you like. And no, you won't be 'complete' without several big knives, a couple different machetes, and a GB axe or two.;) Then, you'll 'need'....

Anyone want to trade their BK 9 for my BK 7 with custom kydex survival sheath from Scott Hendryx? I bought the BK 7 before they came out with the 9 and after seeing the 9 I really want one.

stich, What's your reasoning for staying under 18" on machetes?

They're just too long and unwieldy for me. They get heavy and I have less blade control. I think the one I keep in the truck is 15" plus handle. That's plenty for me. It gets heavy fast swinging it around. I don't think 18" would be too big, but I do think 22" would, for my uses.

It's the only knife I have that made me name it. That's gotta mean something.

Yooohoooo!! My BK-9 has arrived. Awesome knife. Can`t wait to chop down something with it, almost began with the furniture:D .

I have both the BK-7 and the BK-9 and have found the handles of the BK-9 fit my hand much better than the BK-7. The BK-9 is truly an impressive knife for the money.
