Easy on me here, its my second post on this forum, never really done forums but had to join this one.

So I am really trying to decide here. I just received my first Esee knives, holy moly so amazing, an Izula and an Esee-4. LOVE THEM.

I am building a new bug out bag, and for about the same price I can get a BK2 AND a RAT7, or I can just get the Esee-6.

Am I already a knife name snob??? I feel like the Esee is what I want, and I hope it isn't just cause of the name, but to get TWO amazing knives for the price of one, hmmmmmmm... Advice, opinions?

BK2 is 1/4" thick. So is the ESSE 5. ESSE 6 & RAT 7 are 3/16" thick. If you decide to get a 3/16" thick blade, you owe it to yourself to check out a BK7. It is a perfect large small/ish/er blade. Also Check out a BK16, GREAT small/er knife.

Sorry I can't comment on the RAT knife. But if you already have two ESEE products, you might like to add a Becker for the variety and experience. If you're looking for a larger knife like the RAT7 or ESEE 6, maybe the BK7 or BK9? The BK2 is super thick and heavy - I'd probably not choose it unless there was a specific task in mind. In fact the BK2 weighs more than the BK7 and almost as much as the BK9 (the BK9 is a tad heavier than the BK2, but the BK2 'feels' heavier because it's a stubbier shorter blade) .

Then again, once you're onto a good thing (ESEE) why not stick with it?

Tough call.

I think you need a Kabar BK-2. I have an ESEE-4 also (among others). I really don't have a bug out bag, I use rubbermaid tubs. My plan is to load up as many as possible with food and supplies that would fit in a large van and see where the wind blows me to. You can stack them like 3 high. I could take a LOT of stuff with me.

You will end up getting all of them, ha ha! The 6 is awesome. I have most of the Esee knives and most of the Becker knives. hard to say which to get next, but since you have the Esee 4 I would go with the BK 7 for a bigger size next. Then start chipping away by getting the BK 2 and the Esee 5. The 6 is a nice knife, but I tend to grab the BK7 over it. And if I had to sell them all but one, I would be left with the BK 2, or the Esee 5. Or maybe the BK7. The Esee 4 just might be the perfect one-knife-to-have. Hmmm. See, Im no help at all.

The Izula was my gateway Esee as well, followed by the Esee 4, Candiru, AH1 and Esee 5... addictive steel :)
I prefer Esee 5 over the bk2 because of the handle material and sheath, the Esee 6 is a different knife to handle then the Esee 5 or BK2. Try them out at a local store to see what you prefer if that's possible.
I do think the RAT7 is a very interesting knife though (I'd love to have one), so a tough choice, but I'm pretty sure you can't really make a wrong choice there as they all are great knives, with the Esee beeing unbeatable for their warranty..

I WANT THEM ALLLLLL!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! I am loving the input, so please keep going. Still on the fence.

I like the Rat7, it is a pretty handy blade.

The Rat7 scales are a bit slimmer in hand compared to the Becker Grivory scales, and afford more traction against unmodified Becker scales. If the Rat7 scales are too slim for you, you can easily add a Ranger band to give some more girth.

You should really try to handle both in hand if at all possible. The Rat7 is a good blade, but then again, the BK7 and 9 are serious usable tools also.

You can't make a bad choice here! I take my ESEE 6 with me a lot more than I do my BK2. Choice is yours, but enjoy whatever you pick!

Id love to have a shop that carried them so I could feel them all, unfortunately, and fortunately, I live in a little town in the woods. So the closest I get is word of mouth, although there is a bk2 at a gun shop here I got to hold, I loved the 1/4" blade, maybe not practical, but it felt so beefy.

Well, now with my Esee Izula and an Esee-4, I think what it is coming down to for me is either an Esee-5 or an Esee-6. I just can't get over the beefyness of the 5, I am wanting a SHTF knife for my bug out bag. 5 or 6??

Made the decision. Getting an esse-5. I have the $ now and may not latter. A knife under $100 is a lot easier to get in the future than one over $100. So beckers are probably in my future.

You will end up getting all of them, ha ha!

Lord isn't that the truth. I really doubt that you would be disappointed with any of the knives listed above. My current infatuation is an ESEE 6. Man I like that knife.

You really can't go wrong with anything from ka-bar/becker, ESEE, or Ontario (to name a few). Couple years back I broke into Beckers with the BK2 and BK9 and I do not regret it.

Right now I'd recommend a pair over a single, expensive knife. You got the becker line, Ka-Bar heavy line, the ontario spec plus and ranger lines. Or you could get some Condor knives and probably afford three. There's also the schrade SCHF9 that's 1/4" thick, ~6.5" long blade, and about $35. The Cold Steel Bushman/ bowie bushman are pretty thin but are pretty good for the price.

I hope to end up with everything in Esee line and Beckers. As well as a few others F1, Spyderco Bushcraft, and on and on and on.

I believe they are all coated blades made of 1095 steel. Is this what you originally wanted, and are you OK with their qualities (not stainless, easier to sharpen, more modern steels with better edge holding qualities, etc.). If you are, the esee knives have a lifetime warranty.. I like the blade shape of the BK7, but the sheath is nylon and loose, and the handle material is smooth plastic. (I have an esee-6 and bk7).

If I were to do it again, I probably would have saved up for something stainless steel from Fallkniven, or Bark River or Blackjack. Hope you enjoy your purchase, in any event :)
