Becker BK3 Tac Tool Thoughts?

Anyone have one of these and use it regularly? Kind of an intriguing blade... I can see it being useful for the backpacking trips, camping and mountain biking I do... My only draw back would be the serrations... I see one member here found a blank and put his own edge on it. I would love to get my hands on one of those... I guess my question is does anyone have real world experience with this blade? Thoughts?

Also... I found this ridiculous pistol bayonet that is marketed as a Becker Tac Tool on some river store...?

The BK3 isn't really a backcountry / wilderness style knife. It will work but that's not what it was designed for. Pretty much any of the other Beckers will do you better for backcountry / wilderness use.

Also the bayonet you pictured isn't really a Becker. It's style like one and has the name licensed to it, but it's not a real Becker.

it's authorized :) it's just not ... a for real use tool. more of a fun novelty.

I agree. I just have a feeling someone has used it for more than it was designed for.

When I had mine, I used it in the woods almost extensively; it isn't perfect, but it can be a great tool if you get creative. Great splitter, great prybar (of course!), used it for de-limbing chopping...It isn't half bad, but is sure is not the BEST chopper or bushcrafty blade.

I used it to
-dig
-pry
-chop
-de-limb
-make mediocre feathersticks
-strike firesteels
-make shavings w/ the spine
-used it as a draw-knife
-planing
-splitting

It is a tool that, no matter what, I could be confident in no matter what I was doing since it is indestructible (unless taking apart a Dodge Omni! :D)
It was, IMHO, one of my favorite stfu and get it done blades for sure though. I would send it to you to test it out, but I gave it away to a loving home...sorry brother. If you have any questions about it just let me know; I am more than happy to share my experiences with it.

If you get a chance you should talk to Moose about the BK3. Me and him were talking last night and he has some stories about that particular knife. I like the BK3, but stock, it is not that great at chopping. Now if you hit the backside with a little convex action, I hear it changes that significantly and chops like a fiend.

Didn't they beat the holy hell out of a Dodge Omni with it? I remember seeing some thread about it.....

I believe Moose also mentioned that his wife likes using it around the camp site as well.

I had one, kept it in my truck, and for 3 months it never left the sheath, so I traded it for another BK2 with micarta.

Yeah, you were the one that did that. I tried looking for the thread where you showed that off, but I didn't have any luck finding it. Post up a link to those pics!

As you can see, the back edge was not convexed all that high. Though this may be, she still chopped like nobody's business. If anyone ends up convexing a 3 in the future, I might suggest knocking more material off of the shoulder since the primary bevel starts 2/3 of the way down from the spine. It may be wise to convex the back edge and bring it higher as well; this will insure deeper bites and more efficient chopping from the blade. When I would chop, it would not bite super deep, but it was better than my hatchet for dang sure.

Using a chisel grind while chopping takes some getting used to, so I would change your technique if you do not bring the back edge up higher.

Right on, thanks for the info and pics fellas. Interesting to see the convexed backside of the chisel grind. I have a Grayman that is a chisel and you're right about the chopping technique... I think I might just buy one and see what happens...

Just remember to thin the blade out a bit. If you don't, chopping with that edge geometry will be like chopping with the side of a crowbar. It took a lot of work for it to be a beast IMO.
