My young daughter and I went for an overnight backpacking trip only 4 miles from the car on a sunny 85 degree day and 56 degree forecast night in Yosemite national park.

Around 8:00 it began raining, just a little at first, then a downpour through the night. When we woke up the next morning, the tent was basically flooded, our sleeping bags were soaked and clothes were soaked.

Since it was just an overnight trip, she only brought a cotton sweatshirt and sweatpants. I had some very lightweight poly pants and shirt.

Luckily, I packed two ponchos to keep the rain off us after we woke up.

The forest was soaked, all of the wood on the ground was water logged and my daughter was wet and shivering.

Thankfully, I had my BK7 and saw with me. I found some vertical standing deadwood sawed and battoned kindling and fuel. With my cotton balls soaked with vaseline and firestriker, we had a raging fire in the wet forest in about 20 minutes.

A half hour later, we were dry, laughing and eating pancakes.

Lots of lessons here about unexpected weather, cotton clothing and fire prep.

Thanks to the BK7 for helping to save the day!

Thank you for sharing your adventure, thats the kind of stuff I like reading about. Your daughter learned something she will keep with her the rest of her life. And the time you spent with her is priceless.

PS Thanks for the picture of your BK7. Did you do the slabs yourself?

She sure did. Cotton sucks !:D

Great story! Love the BK7 pictures, great job with the scales! Got my BK-7 this past weekend, and just using it this morning really quick before I took off for work, I can see how it's a blade that can save the day!

Cheers!

Its good you not only had the BK-7, but were wise enough to bring fire starting materials with you. Your daughter learned several valuable things that day.

Indeed, I wish I could be there the day she goes backpacking with her future husband (she's only 11 now) and it starts to snow/rain and he looks befuddled....then she pulls out her own BKT, fire kit and starts batonning wood!!

Great story MArathonman.
Glad that things turned out well for you and your daughter. :)
Good knowledge (having the firekit and firestarting skills), and good tools.
Made a crappy situation a whole lot better.
Good on you! :)

Cheers
