Looking for a gift for my stepson. Can anyone give me a rundown on these two similar knives?

BK9 has a large following, I have one and I think it's a nice knife.

I also have an RD9, which is quite a bit more rough on the F&F , the handle is not as comfortable.

That said, the RD9 has a cool factor that still leaves me preferring it to the Becker,
and the scales are canvas micarta, which I like.

I would say that it is more "rough and tumble," so to speak, and very tough.

If it were me I would go RD9, but I'll bet I am in the minority in that opinion,
this site is crawling with beckerheads.

The dinstictive qualities of the RD9 are what impress me the most,
it has more of a rough custom / hand made quality.

I have 2 Bk9's. Well ok, I did give one to my oldest son but anyway, they are absolutuely fabulous knives. We use them very hard and have had no problems at all with them.

Go for the Bk 9 there is alot more after market goods and he will have more options if he likes. Also it's proven its self time and time again plus its alot more competivley priced as well. I'm sure he will enjoy either just my 2 c.

These aren't subtle knives, and the heat treat on such simple steels is not especially difficult.
To me it comes down to the style that you prefer. Practically speaking speaking the differences between the knives are small.

This.
I for one find the BK9 to be kind of boring (but the BK2 is pretty awesome).
