Hey all, I've noticed the bk9 is actually advertised as being a combat bowie.
Most people use the bk9 as a survival tool / chopper.
In your opinion, is the blade tip acute enough to be used tactically as a stabbing weapon ?
The belly of the blade looks quite big in some pictures and the clip point descends at quite a steep angle, making the tip appear obtuse.
In contrast the bk7 clip and under belly form a more acute angle (tip is more pointy).

Name convention aside, I see no issues with the stabbing abilities of the blade. One of the benefits of the swedge is its ability to "tip first" split wood... IE making kindling with the tip of the blade. Furthermore, Camillus (If I remember correctly) actually released a "hog hunter" or pig sticker version of the BK9... all they did was sharpen the swedge up a bit. Would the BK9 make a formidable fighting weapon? Well it sure is a big piece of sharpened steel that would certainly not feel good to be stuck or slashed with.

If your goal is to get a Becker for purely fighting reasons, then I think the BK5 would be your best bet. It is designed for cutting meat, and has the pointiest tip of the bunch.

Makes sense to me  It wouldn't take too much work to sharpen all or part of the BK5's long swedge, either.

The 7 is more acute. The 9 is more obtuse.
However, the 9 could make a very formidable stabber. Especially with a sharpened swedge.

The swedge on the 9 is plenty stabby. If you want though, you can always mod it.

The 9 IS stabby.

I agree that the 5 is the choice pick, its a basically a Japanese tanto design when I look at it.

What you planning on fighting? Don't go scarin all the mountain lions and bears out of north america with your Becker now.. its too much for them to handle.

I'd take a 9 into a melee fight any time. Hands, arms, and heads could be easily taken in a single shot if a guy had that in mind.

I bought the BK9 for a combat knife rather than a camping or survival knife. The small hilt is a little off putting for stabbing purposes but it's nothing that can't be overcome.

BK9 would make a great fighting knife but the BK5 is a lot lighter and quicker in hand. I also like the ability to choke up on the choil. Opens up the possibility of many more handholds. The 7s design was originally intended as a replacement for the Kabar 1211. Worth taking a look at too.

Not planning on using it to fight, more of a collector then a user. I'm enthusiastic about knife designs and function.

You guys are great, thanks for all the replies.

Want to clip a 9 sooooooo baaaaaaad........

I'm going the new route. Mine is staying like it is.

And Muffy I'll ditto anybody with a nice knife. "My name is tradewater and I'm a slut."

This ditto threesome is making me rethink my affinity for this forum.

Camillus did a sharpened swedge version it called the Hog Hunter.
