Becker Campanion vs Gerber LMF II

I do a lot of backpacking in the Sierra Nevada mountain range and some hunting as well, and am looking for a sturdy fixed blade camp/survival knife to do just about everything. How do the Becker Campanion and the Gerber LMF II compare? I really like the grip on the Gerber, but am hesitant because of the semi-serrated blade. How is the handle on the Becker Campanion? I found some good deals online, looks like I can get either knife w/sheath for around $70 shipped. What would you recommend?

We just had a thread on this a week or two ago: you might want to look it up and get even more viewpoints.

Actually, this really shouldn't even be a question: The Becker BK-2 Campanion is a whole lot more knife, for a lot less money. Out of all the knives I have, the BK-2 is the one that goes with me to the bush every time. If ever armageddon occurs, there may be only two things that survive — cockroaches and Becker BK-2's: they're that tough.

It's a great knife, tougher than snot, easy to sharpen, holds an edge well, and they have a great (IMHO) handle. What's not to love?

You can find them online at places like Tomar's ( http://www.tomarskabars.com/Becker_Knives.html ) and others for very reasonable prices.

Get the BK-2 — you won't regret it.

BK-2! 1095CV steel, 1/4" thick. It's a beast of a knife and will be around long after the apocalypse. The grip is very comfortable and fits the hand nicely. I think you'll get a lot more for your money with the Becker.

But I won't stop you from getting the Chinese made knife from a scissor company. ;)

BK2 is a better knife, but I wouldnt want to carry a 1/4in thick chunk of metal on a hiking trip. Thats just me, I prefer something lighter for hiking/backpacking. Something like a RAT Cutlery RC4.

Get the becker as of the weight the knife sort of rides high an tight an you don't notice the weight until you undo your belt to take a leek I got my BK2 for 55$ on ebay so shop around

Thanks for all the input, and thanks cgmblade for the links! My new Becker BK-2 is in the mail.

The Gerber LMF and Prodigy are still made in the USA.

They're both good knives but the Companion is about half as much and I think you get a longer blade. Although I will admit, I've used both the Prodigy and the LMF and they are both tough well made knives that can take a lot of abuse.

I had a Campanion when they first came out. I was looking for a short chopper. It was too handle heavy to work well. I sold it with no regrets.
