i'm looking at the becker campanion. i hear there good knives but i want some opinions. Let me know and thanks

I've also been looking at getting one. I doubt there's much that could be said to dissuade me. I'd rather just buy a Swamp Rat, but |I'm not waiting for one.

If you watch the for sale forums you can see some Busses and Swamp Rats now and then for sale used but in good condition. I just let a Swamp Rat Bandicoot w/kydex sheath slip by without taking it that was pretty nice.

That is how I buy 90% of my knives anymore. I've had pretty good experiences dealing with fellow knife forum and blade forum members. In many cases with buying used from forum members I get the knife I buy faster than if I order it from a dealer. Not trying to put the dealers down because certainly not all are that way. When I order from Fred at KnifeOutlet or New Graham they get things out pretty quick.

I got one.

First: Be prepared for the handles. You either like 'em or hate 'em. I happen to like 'em but I've got big hands.

Second: This is a HEAVY, heavy knife. Roughly a 1/4 thick and extremely stout. IF you have to depend on it for survival, it probably wouldn't let you down. It isn't exactly ideal for food prep, though. It feels like more of a chopper to me but... If I wanna chopper I've got a RD9 that is more appropriate than the Campanion with the short blade.

So, to me, it is a little odd. Very heavy and thick but in a shorter fixed blade format... It is a bit of a contradiction. I believe it is more of the companion to the Becker Brute in the same way that the Becker Crewman/Utility is to the BK9 Combat Bowie.

A nice kydex sheath. A well made knife IMHO, especially for the money, but only if you are looking for a 5-6" chopper. Some people like small choppers. With a blade that short, I want it to feel more like a knife... like my Swamp Rat Howling Rat.

The Campanion IS a good knife. Just be sure it is what you want ~ It wasn't quite what I was expecting. Try to see one in person if you can...

It's a great knife, and probably the one that I own that I'll never get rid of.

STR made a pretty good point (although probably unintentional) when he commented that you can almost always find used Busses and Swamp Rats for sale in the used knife forums--I don't know when the last time I saw a Campanion for sale was... I think that speaks volumes for the knife.
