Will a 12" AK really chop better than similiar sized knives such as a Becker Companion, Becker Crewman, or other brand knives in the same size range?

Don't know...if anyone wants to send me some of these kinves for testing, I'll gladly do so and write up reports (I am an engineer after all). I'll even provide good homes to them aftereward! :-)

I have the BK7. I can tell you without a doubt that the 12'AK chops better then the BK7. I would imagine that the AK would then in turn really out chop the Companion or the Crewman since the BK7 has a couple of inches in length on either one of them. The blade heavy (weight forward) design of the AK makes it hard for any knife in the same general size to outchop it. Perhaps something like the Tops Tracker but it is alot closer in design to to AK then alot of the knives out there. Hope that helps. mark

The companion and the crewman are both about 5" blades. Not really comparable at all to a 12" AK. I think weight and sharpness wise you would have to get up to about a Becker Brute or maybe a BK9 Bowie to equal an AK of that size. They would do a good job, expecially the Brute, because it does have a nice sweet spot and good weight to it.

I guess those weren't the most appropriate models to compare to sizewize after taking a second look. Even though I really like Khuks, I guess that I am still wondering if in the more compact sizes they are as versital or have a distinct advantage over knives of "comparable" size and different style. I know the answer when it comes to something like a 15" AK or 18" WWII, but do the postives diminish in the 12" range?

For the most part the 12" AK will out chop the BK9 also. I have both the BK7 and BK9. Now either one of the Beckers will be a better slicer but won't out chop the AK. My biggest problem with the 12" AK is the handle size. It was a little to small for me. I ended up giving mine to my sister in law, it fit her hand just fine and is perfect for her to use in the yard etc. Another thing to consider that as tough as the Beckers are, and I think they are one of the best values on the market, the AK would be much more durable of a knife. The Beckers do not handle prying very well.

I've compared the 12" AK and Camptramp. I'd give the 12" AK the edge in chopping, and the Camptramp in slicing. But both by about 15% ;)

However throw a Pen Knife in there and it beats them both.

Hollow- remind me- how long and heavy is the Pen compared to a 12" AK?

About the same length, but several ounces heavier. Especially heavier out on the end.(the Penknife) Kind of has the WW2 ish type feeling to me.
