Becker Companion Sheath - repair ideas?

Hi All,

Just got back from a 10 day winter warfare exercise in the Rocky Mountains. I took the opportunity to test out the Becker Companion. I found the knife to be an excellent investment despite its heavy wieght. I chopped wood, cleaned out small bushes, open ration packs, cut cam nets, cordage. I gave it some good use. Not a survival workout but it stayed on my hip through a lot of activities and extreme temperatures (-50C on night) The knife handled well but the sheath gave out after three days. The webbing material that is used appears to be a loose weave and over time the attachment point for the retaining strap came loose. This left me with just the tension of the kydex sheath to hold the knife in place. Considering all the movement I was doing I did like the idea of the knife falling free so I tied the lanyard through the belt loop to hold it in place. Later that night while I was on duty in the CP, I reattached the strap by slipping the mounting point through the webbing and melting the area to stiffen it up. Held for the remainder of the exercise but it certainly isnt very strong.

Does anyone have any suggestions on repair - replacement? I was thinking that stiff scuba webbing might be the best and using screw attachment points vice the one time push type that is presently used. I like the way that Cold Steel attaches the webbing to the kydex. Any ideas or experiences? Thanks in advance.

Contact Normark. His work is outstanding and relatively inexpensive.

It's not the pace of life that concerns me, It's the sudden stop at the end.

Jeff,
e-mail me with your address and I’ll send you a replacement ASAP.

After you receive the one from me send the damaged sheath my way so I can see the failures. I would like to determine if it was an assembly problem or a material problem.

I had the same problem with my sheath. The rivette thing pulled out of the nylon webbing. I repaired mine by taking some extra retaining strap snaps I had. I took the outer snap part and attached it to the webbing through the hole where the rivette originally was. It seems to hold pretty good. A friend of mine suggested putting the retaining strap, a little lower, through the kydex part of the sheath. Does anybody think it would be possible to attach the strap to the kydex part.

I think that if the retaining strap was lower it would get in the way when you drew the knife. I think stiffer webbing and chicago type screws is the way to go. I have some time to trial a MK 2 sheath!

Folks,
Sorry I've been on the road [I still am], but I'm glad to see my friend Scott Evans from EDGEWORKS is already on top of this! I was gonna contact Scott ASAP, but I already see he is taking care of this issue. Either way, CAMILLUS/BK&T/EDGEWORKS will warranty the sheath 100%. I'll get near a computer next week, and I'll make sure everything is ok.

Scott, thanks for the help buddy.

I had the same problem with the sheath for my Machax. The strap looked insecure to me so I tugged on it and it popped off over the riviot.
