A couple days after Christmas, I decided to do a little fire-making with my son and nephew to get them out of the house for a while. The fudge, pie, and video games were getting to their heads! There was not much wood to choose from, in fact, there was one dead tree that they had pulled up and was laying in the back yard. When I say tree, picture an 8' branch the size of your thumb. Anyway, we broke it in to fire pit sized pieces, gathered dead grass to make a little kindling nest, separated out the twigs to burn first and kept the larger pieces at hand for when it took off. All meaningful work was done with the BK14, but there was a SAK and Kershaw Leek around keeping hands busy while the Becker was being used.
First, my son wanted to show his cousin a feather-stick, so I got it started and then they he went to town on it. It was really a bad piece of wood to do it on, but he worked his butt off and made something of it.
After we had everything prepared, we threw a little magnesium in the nest and started throwing sparks on what was left of an old combo firesteel / magnesium block. I kept repeating, "get the steel down by the kindling and you can throw the sparks right in the middle". Nobody listened all that much.
Then my son steps up and throws sparks from 2-3 feet away. One strike and we had lift-off. If I ever need luck in a survival situation, I guess he's my go to!
