Becker fun with the boys

A couple days after Christmas, I decided to do a little fire-making with my son and nephew to get them out of the house for a while. The fudge, pie, and video games were getting to their heads! There was not much wood to choose from, in fact, there was one dead tree that they had pulled up and was laying in the back yard. When I say tree, picture an 8' branch the size of your thumb. Anyway, we broke it in to fire pit sized pieces, gathered dead grass to make a little kindling nest, separated out the twigs to burn first and kept the larger pieces at hand for when it took off. All meaningful work was done with the BK14, but there was a SAK and Kershaw Leek around keeping hands busy while the Becker was being used.

First, my son wanted to show his cousin a feather-stick, so I got it started and then they he went to town on it. It was really a bad piece of wood to do it on, but he worked his butt off and made something of it.

After we had everything prepared, we threw a little magnesium in the nest and started throwing sparks on what was left of an old combo firesteel / magnesium block. I kept repeating, "get the steel down by the kindling and you can throw the sparks right in the middle". Nobody listened all that much.

Then my son steps up and throws sparks from 2-3 feet away. One strike and we had lift-off. If I ever need luck in a survival situation, I guess he's my go to!

This is awesome. Can't wait until I get to be a dad -- man, being able to teach this stuff to your own son must be quite a gift.

Good to see men teaching their sons to be men. Looks like they had an awesome time! Thanks for sharing.

Man that looks like fun. I've got a one year old and one more on the way and I can't wait to do this with them. Now I just need to practice. Thanks for bringing us along.

That's too cool. Tell him he's better with fire steel than I am!

Well done. Appears the boys had a good time and learned a lot!

Hard to believe your Wisconsin weather was suitable for short sleeves on Christmas day . . .

We weren't in WI, we were in N Texas. It was in the high 50's that day, but felt like summer for us!

Bet it did!

I mowed the front yard Christmas Eve here in NE Tennessee. Needed it!

Warmer than usual fall and except for two recent cold days, a right pleasant winter so far.

Now that's Christmas fun for sure. Great job getting those guys away from the electronics and doing cool stuff.

Good to see, brother.

Oh, it just isn't men teaching boys to be men.

Sometimes us men teaching our girls to be women too. Just sayin'. Since I have girls, ya know.

Looks like great times were had. :)

Now you can call your son The Human Torch. :D

It's great to see the kids learning something useful and having a good time doing it. Have to teach them early and teach them right, you are off to a great start man. Soon he will be asking for his own 14 better keep an extra on hand or yours might go missing haha. Thanks for sharing.

Wisconsin has let me down this Christmas, that much is for sure. I've got three sets of skis all waxed and ready to go at the back door, and the only thing that has got any action has been my speedskates. We weren't even able to play our traditional game of Christmas Broomball this year.
