Having recently got into hunting (duck, turkey, deer) I have been debating which of my beckers would be best for dressing game.

so my question is what becker do you use on game?

17.

16 or 17 for sure. I prefer the 16 because I feel less likely to pierce an organ with a drop point.

I have a 14/24,15,16,17 that Im choosing from. I like them all but having little experience in this task makes it hard to decide. I appreciate the suggestions so far.

For birds, 14/24. For deer, 16 or 17.

I've used a 5.25" SOG NW Ranger with a clip point and found it a bit too long/awkward so I'd be predisposed against the 15. But I luv the 15 so I'd at least try it.

Indeed, since you already have them, take them all along for a 'field test'.

There are some good you tube videos of an Asian gentleman using the Bk16 to field dress a deer, ("hello knife people"), some would know who im talking about. Watching his videos, hard to argue the 16. He actually keeps going back to it after using a realtively more expensive knife.

he's a fun guy!

lots of hunting :D

Gassy I think you are referring to virtuovice. ive watched his videos on the 16 and 17 and he was impressed with both. I tried to see if he had tried a 15 but nothing came up on the search. If I remember correctly he has a video of him reprofiling the belly of the 16 to make it better as well.

I can only comment based on the ones I own and I haven't gotten to try them out yet since they are fairly new, but I think the little Remora is going to be awesome at dressing game. It is small enough to reach up to the windpipe of the deer yet stout enough for everything else. Pair it with the BK2 which would wreck a rib cage and be awesome for quartering and I think you have a winning pair. To be honest even though it is big and heavy I think due to the blade shape the BK2 would make an awesome skinning knife.

For duck and turkey it would depend on if you pluck them or skin them. I really think the small Remora would do a stand up job with either, I think the BK2 could as well. I have quartered out a chicken with the BK2 and just for the fun of it I actually carved a cornish game hen like you would a turkey with the BK2, just to see if it could be done. It is remarkable nimble in the hand for such a beefy knife. I haven't tried filleting fish with it yet and I know it won't take the place of my fillet knives but I am still going to try it.

I don't like pointy knives for skinning if your saving the hide. I use an old hickory skinner and a Forgecraft set for dressing. On the whitetail down here, the skin will pretty much rip right off with a good yank or a few if you hang it. If I did use a becker I'd pick the 14/24 for its size for skinning and the 15 for quartering and back strap. I have no use in busting ribs out.
Course, I hunt in the back yard so I'm not hauling meat for a mile.

That's him Dutch, I enjoy his videos, his sharpening skills are second to none.

yea I do as well. I wish I could free hand sharpen like that guy. I like how he shows magnified shots of thr edge so you can see exactly whats happening as well.

Thanks fpr the input guys. I think ill definitely be taking my 24 in the pack and either my 16 or 17 on my belt. still cant decide between the last two, I love the look of the 17, but the 16 might be the better choice for camping and hunting. a few of you brought up a good point about the sharper point on the 17 possibly piercing something you dont want to, and with my lack of experience the 16 might be better for me.

one more question, how does micarta hold up to blood? I have some micarta scales from the 710 I like to use. or would I be better off with some g10 from tkc? I dont mind the stock grivory, they just feel a little thin at times.

By far, the best for me is the BK11. The size is perfect - longer knives get in your way more than they help, IMO - and it's always on me and handy. I've used it for fish, deer, rabbits, squirrels, etc...

For the heck of it, I've tried other Beckers as well - some with surprisingly good results (BK9 worked waaaaaaaaay better than I expected it to).

BK16 - works well but it's more blade than I need or want for cleaning critters...

BK2 (better than expected for squirrels)...

... and so-so for fish...
